That says more about how many records I buy than about the quality or otherwise of the year's music. So I'll wait a while more before posting a list here. Forgot all about Ariel Pinks Haunted Grafitti album, he's still one of the more interesting young artists and isn't safe and predictable thank the Lord. Revised list, Paul Buchanan drops out. Crisis-ridden, penny-counting 2012 has been a lousy year on many levels and a lot of its music has passed me by - so at the moment I'm either listening to George Harrison, Joni Mitchell or classical stuff - but, presuming some hard cash comes my way before Christmas and I can make the trip into town to see Sad Bruno in his shop(if it's still hanging in there), which, say, 5, of the best albums are absolutely not to be missed? I already like the sound of the Grizzly Bear one, so that's already on the list, otherwise...? | ||

Well, my top 5 are not to be missed obviously Stuart :-) Seriously I've just realised how different they all are though. Grizzly Bear are the slightly kooky, but tuneful American Radiohead. Ty Segall is the new guitar, garagy wunderkid. I'd be amazed if he wasnt all over the music press/websites next year - although in a selfish way I hope he isnt. Ariel Pink is the most leftfield artist in my list, there is nobody else doing what he does, tuneful but still weird. Patterson Hood is the Americana storyteller, who thankfully always has an interesting story to tell. Hot Chip just keep getting better. They have ditched any awkwardness and experimental leanings they had to just make pure dancy, poppy electronic music. If Grizzly Bear are the American Radiohead, then Hot Chip are the UK version of LCD Soundsystem, just more danceable and with hookier songs. | ||

Patterson H sounds more my cup of tea, if a bit Springteenish. Ty Seagull's voice is just too high for me, all my favourite singers inhabit the lower regions in general: unlike Randy, "getting past the voice" is something I can rarely do. I like voices with a dark edge to them. | ||

If nothing else I think EOY polls are informative and are a good reference point as to what interesting releases I might have overlooked. Especially so in the last 10 years or so when almost everything can be listened to in some form online, almost as a try before you buy. There will be a lot of the overlooked stuff that when listened to will not be purchased, but over the years I have been alerted to loads of great albums that I have gone on to buy just by checking out the EOY lists. | ||

I want to stick up for Kevin a bit. He always says what he thinks. I've never found him to be malicious or dishonest. I don't always agree with him but I don't expect to. He doesn't have a thin skin. I get an enormous amount of music guidance from people on this board. I think it's worthwhile to know when people think something's not so hot. If it's someone whose tastes don't track along with mine I keep that in mind. I've backed off expressing some of my personal opinions on music and, honestly, I suspect that restraint deflavorizes the board somewhat. It's fun to trash music sometimes, particularly when it's been lionized everywhere else. I've got enough records that I bought when they were new that haven't stood the test of time. I've also found that fewer than one-half of the critics' darlings will appeal to me in the long run. If somebody can tip me off to the possibility that I'm getting enthused about something that's crap, great! It's fun to see if I end up agreeing in a year or three or if, instead, I hear something in it that the other person doesn't. | ||

I'm always amazed when I make a mildly critical comment on, say, Youtube and am then swiftly showered with responses regarding my apparent oral fondness for the male member as well as a rather too intimate relationship with my mother. Sometimes it's like being back in the school playground. It's possible to state our opinions with force, truth and humour, I hope, without being insulting. Frank Ocean is fucking awful, though. | ||

A few words in defence of Kevin (and his taste in music): I used to find his hatred of some of the music I love abrasive, but now I just smile - everyone's entitled to their opinion, even if forcefully put at times. I find much of the electronic music Kevin extols about as musical as the hum you hear when you open the fridge door. I find most of the reggae music Kevin loves to be utterly boring and repetitive. In my opinion, reggae is almost certainly the most overrated music genre ever known. (I'm not counting rap-metal as music). By the way, I suspect Kevin really does like Hall & Oates, The Beatles and "The Crowdies".  | ||

I think it's hard to imagine a BAD bunga bunga party, to be honest, Padraig. Having seen most of the invitees, I imagine that, to paraphrase what the guy said about sex, even the worst bunga bunga party has to be pretty good. The Frank Ocean crack was just a glib joke of course, not a real judgement: I've only heard a couple of things. But the kind of melismatic singing displayed, that slightly jazzy oh-man-this-is-way-tooooooo-sophisticate d-to-hit-an-actual-tune sort of thing, I do find a bit grating. Have to hear more though, really. | ||

It's been said that crime rates go down in towns where UB40 are playing because the petty thief class are all at the show. My own experience is that when I was selling concert tapes outside Semple Stadium in Thurles during Feile 1991, the only tape that was stolen was a UB40 one.
