Louis Malle's wonderful film 'Atlantic City' from 1981 with Burt Lancaster and Susan Sarandon. A European eye on the city at the moment it was completely changing. As Malle says in an interview included in the extras, there were 3 separate populations; the old timers from the previous boom era (like Lancaster's character), the arrivals (Afro-American, Puerto Ricans) in the 60s/70s to a depressed place, and the recent arrivals following the licencing of betting (Susan Sarandon's character). He also points out that half the buildings were being torn down to be reconstructed. Fascinating, given the subject matter, how "un-American" the film feels. | ||

The Gilmore Girls Seasons 1 – 5 (so far) …well, that’s what a week in bed with flu will lead to, a crazy mad addiction to a series I probably would sight unseen have dismissed as “gurly” but which instead contains some of the funniest comic writing of the last televisual decade and some of the best all woman backchat since the days of Carole Lombard and Rosalind Russell. Strangely cool taste in music too. How, however, the two leads maintain their wonderfully neat figures on a diet of massive takeaways, diner food and no visible form of exercise is perhaps the purest form of female wish-fulfilment. | ||

Jeff Nichols's "Mud" the other day at the cinema. Engaging and beautifully shot yarn, almost a modern day update on the Mark Twain "Huck Finn" tales. The boys' performances are excellent. I liked the fact that it had quite a leisurely pace, almost like a 70s American indie movie. On DVD the German film "Das Leben der Anderen" ("The Lives of Others") from 2006. Gripping tale of East Germany and the Stasi. Another loan from our local library ! | ||

See if their German Cinema section also has 4 minutes, Andrew, if you haven't already caught it. It overeggs the dramatic pudding at certain points, but its fiery central performance carries you through. | ||

I just can't get through the first two episodes of Heimat, lord knows I've tried. Have to have another go one day. Fassbender and Herzog never did much for me either. In my occasional game of "If only one national cinema survived some kind of world celluloid disaster, which would you choose?" the French always win out. Such a rich variety and high level of quality over the years. Plus all those hormone-accelerating actresses I grew up with. | ||

Last night, inspired by Dick Cavett's column remembering Jonathan Winters I spent about 45 lovely minutes watching youtube clips of Winters' (usually) monologues. I was turned onto him by a friend when I was in high school in the early 1970s and loved him but (a) my parents couldn't stand him so I could only see him at a friend's house (Yes! we only had ONE television in the household!) and (b) his show was yanked off the air in nothing flat. Jonathan Winters' humor wasn't intellectual, but it did require an astonishing cerebral capacity by the man himself who only improvised. The classic Winters routine was for somebody to give him an object, a stick or a pen, and then have him improvise a skit from it. Jack Paar used to have him do this all the time. Winters' uninhibited connections between the various impulses and memories in his brain yielded constantly astonishing results. He was like the most brilliant child you have ever encountered. He made spectacular sound effects with his mouth and had a fantastic rubbery face for expressions. Satisfyingly dense, like a good novel, and with the attribute that it is almost as difficult for the viewer to know where to place their loyalties as it is for many of the characters. I hope the genuinely disturbing torture sequence ends soon, though. | ||

Has anyone hereabouts seen the new series of Arrested Development? We don't have Netflicks in Australia. Not that I'd be a subscriber even if we did (I don't even have cable TV). Is it any good? I keep checking for clips on YouTube, but apart from the trailer and one other clip there has been nothing. Netflicks are obviously being very judicious in having clips removed lest it eat into their earnings. | ||

Andrew: "Annie" is indeed a great song and "Rough Mix" is terrific. Padraig, I'm halfway through "Arrested Development" season 4 and it's good so far, not great. It's hard to describe but they spend the early episodes focusing on an individual character, which I don't think is so successful, since the original AR was an amazing ensemble show. Maybe that was because of schedules, etc. Someone told me it comes together at the end, which might allay my fears they slightly screwed up a great opportunity. For now, though, I give it a B+. | ||

And a week later I'm counting down the hours to the third test. Unfortunately, I'll be watching this one on TV too, despite it being on in Sydney. The game was sold out about three years ago. I just can't get excited about buying tickets that far in advance, though I now wish I had bought one. I realised how much I wish I had a ticket when: 1 I started asking complete strangers in Lions jerseys yesterday if they had a spare ticket. (I was in Manly yesterday and it was swamped with red Lions jerseys. This afternoon I'm in the city and it's also swamped with Irish, English, Scottish and Welsh people clad in red. 2 I had a dream last night that I was on a tour bus where the MC/host was Michael Stipe. At the end he handed me two tickets for the Lions game. I woke up feeling very happy. | ||

Before Midnight. A fine addition to the now trilogy. I was surprised that I was the youngest person in the cinema though. I thought it would have been full of people my age who, like me, had grown up with these characters. |
