Richard Thompson - Devonside Standout track for me on the Hand of Kindness album, which, come to think of it, I no longer have. Dark and brooding melancholy, what old Dick does best. |

I still have my old Hannibal recordings on vinyl and CD from the 1980's of the Hand of Kindness album. I got hooked on Richard and Linda Thompson as well as RT era Fairport Convention around 1982. Oddly, I stopped buying Richard Thompson solo albums (aside from the odd one here and there) a few years later. Song of the day - A Family Affair by Sly and the Family Stone. Speaking of which, my 84 year old dad had a vein transplant yesterday from his groin to his right leg in an effort to save his last leg from being amputated. It looks good so far, as his surgeon gave him a 70% chance of success after the operation. |

Judy Collins - Send in the clowns Every journal here has been quoting this song since the latest election results, but none of my friends actually seem to have heard it, which is a shame. The arrangement on the JC version is particularly lovely. My mother, to my shame as I came down the road from school, could often be heard trilling this out the kitchen window. |

Salome Leclerc - Partir ensemble More from Quebec, the opening track for Salome's Sous les arbres album. It's a grower, I think, far less immediate than Marie-Pierre Arthur's debut, far less sprightly and sunny, musically very spare: here there's someone thumping a dustbin, a bit of Shadowy guitar, a nice ethereal choral part - try to stick around to 1.30 when it suddenly gets a bit gutsier. Intriguing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cAY6DcIEV Vw |

Bitter springs - Gathering dust I can't imagine why a band so perfectly up my street managed to avoid me for so long... Meanwhile, have discovered that Inverness has a pretty decent record shop called Imperial Music...it will be a bit of a scurry between buses, but I'll have to try... |

Stuart, I adore them and I have to say I am surprised that they do not appeal to more people on this forum. Do you own a copy of 'Best Bakers On The Island' by the band? It is a compilation album. Bitter Springs - Muggers Take A Beating http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTKt1A-AR aQ |

Spotify have quite a few albums by The Bitter Springs - including Best Bakers On The Island and From The Parish Of Arthritis as recommended by Hugh. Surprised that I havent heard of a band from England that has been going as long as they have. |

Kevin, They started off in 1986 as the Last Party and changed their name to the Bitter Springs in 1996. Most of their material has been released on their own label ( Harvey.) |

Yes Hugh, just checked them out on Google, Wiki and Allmusic. Have already clocked two references to the Go-betweens, noticed they were tied in with Vic Godard, and the guys on Allmusic mentioned The Fall, Belle and Sebastien, Stephin Merritt and Tindersticks. All of which definitely got me interested. The song One Punch/Lights Out is terrific, even on first listen, so I'm optimistic for the rest. |

I remember Hugh linking me to a Bitter Springs track a while back but I didn't bond with it. It might have been the Christmas song. Reading all these recent posts I decided to order a copy of "From the Parish of Arthritis" figuring it might be good to start with a relatively early release of theirs. |

The song "Barbara" won me over immediately. They seem to have the mix right of what should appeal to a GBs/Smiths/Fall sort of person, a knack for tunefulness, sardonic, funny lyrics, and a non-hectic, slightly gravelly voice - that reminds me terribly of someone I can't put my finger on - which doesn't need to shout to get the message across. This board has certainly humbled me in terms of what I used to think I knew about music! |

Joni Mitchell - Free man in Paris Just to push ahead with JM a moment: I didn’t know this was about Dave Geffen, though it obviously deals with some music industry bigwig: it’s a neat little character sketch of a man under a lot of pressure who suddenly finds himself absolutely out of it all in Paris, and the whole impetus of the tune captures this – it sings airiness and freedom. Geoff calls Court & Spark slick, but, listening to her first 8 albums, none of her work can really be described as raw or loose – her gift expresses itself through structure; so when jazz encouraged its unfettering, it really did her a disservice. Favourite moment, when her voice slides up on “wander…down the Champs-Élysées…” – it’s as giddy as a hang-glider taking flight, a perfect image of release. |

Yes reading your posts is always a pleasure Stuart and interesting and probably accurate thoughts on the negative influence of her 'jazz' direction. I was happy to go along with her journey up to Mingus at least and always thought she was striving for an artistic freedom that wasn't available in the traditional singer songwriter form or format which she clearly excelled in. The breaking down of that form is interesting and I love Don Juan's Reckless Daughter, personally I just wasn't ready for total breakdown. |

The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations Firmly as I am in the Brian-Wilson-is-not-a-genius camp, this came on the radio today (Tom Wolfe was being interviewed and chose it) and I stopped what I was doing to properly listen to it. And this song is perfection. What must that have sounded like in 1966 ? French radio has been playing a new song by Sarah Blasko ("God Fearing"). Any reports on the last release ? |
