My best friend has just been invited to go on Desert Island Discs on BBC Radio 4 and this has prompted lots of bouncing back and forth with me for potential choices , for our foreign contingent who may not be aware the 'castaway' must choose 8 songs, 1 book and 1 luxury. I have been choosing my own which seem to change on a daily basis but currently stand as :

Beach Boys- Till I Die
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
Buzzcocks - Harmony in my Head
Nancy Sinatra - You Only Live Twice (get John Barry here too)
Scott Walker - The Amorous Humphrey Plugg
Felt - Primitive Painters
Kevin Ayers - Girl on a Swing
Nat King Cole - Nature Boy (this was played in the church at my wedding)
BOOK
F Scott Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby
LUXURY
Tabasco Sauce

Any other castaways on the board with a selection to share?

I bet we'd all like to get a chance on DID... come on, CV, who's the famous mate??

off the top of my head:

Morrissey - Every day is like Sunday
Bob Dylan - Tangled up in blue
Alain Bashung - La nuit je mens
Van Morrison - Steal my heart away
Dave Gilmour - Fat old sun (live)
Leonard Cohen - Hallelujah
The Velvet Underground - New age (live)
Focus - Questions? Answers! Answers? Questions!

The book would have to be Proust's Recherche, because on a desert island is the only way I'll ever finish the f***er.

Maybe an acoustic guitar, so I might finally learn to play one. Unless I could have an Indian restaurant...

Stuart,
just been checking out some of your choices , do you mean 'Answers? Questions!Questions? Answers!' ?
I may have put Tangled Up In Blue or Positively 4th Street or Like a Rolling Stone in on a different day

The Van Morrison song is gorgeous Stuart, thank you so much for that, I have not bothered with anything after Veldon Fleece up until now, am ordering the album right away

Well, it was off the top of my head! I think my own idea is more logical, however.
I know Focus are a minority interest, and indeed, in one of Sebastian Faulks' novels, considered the likely favourite listening of the weak-minded and potentially homicidal, but they still produced a lot of extremely beautiful music. The guitar and flute improvisation on this track is magical - perfect listening for an island sundown as the native women wend their sinuous way towards my hut. Or is it completely deserted??

But if you stopped at Veedon Fleece, then No Guru, No something or other, No teacher would really be worth getting: one of his strongest later albums.

I have to get the song, looks like it's on a best of which I may be able to pick up cheaper.
Alas I believe the island to be uninhabited other wise I may have picked some more romantic choices myself

"Steal your heart.." is me and the old lady's song... shouldn't really let myself be distracted by any hypothetically indigenous females, then, I guess...

Good thread.

Songs:
Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill (never fails to make me happy)
The Waterboys - Glastonbury Song (also never fails to make me happy)
Talking Heads - Once In A Lifetime
P.I.L. - Rise
The Jam - Town Called Malice
R.E.M. - It's The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Jeff Buckley - Grace
Scott Walker - Joanna

Book:
Stephen King's 11/22/63 (because it's brilliant, and long).

Luxury:
Tabasco (might make me get over my dislike of almost all fish).

And now, thanks to the frightful magick of an iPod playlist, I'm listening to my Desert Island Discs in the order listed above. I can feel my spirits rising already. Whitefish with Tabasco for supper again. Nice bit of coconut milk to wash it down.
