Have any of you ever helped crowd fund anything? I did it last year to help fund an album by Irish band The Walls. And I've just done it again to help fund a new record from Irish musician Sean Millar. He is immensely talented (and a very nice fellah too by the way) and I consider it €50 (Aus$63/US$65/£43) very well spent. There are other less and more expensive contributions one can make. More details here if anyone else is a Sean Millar fan. http://musicbeggar.com/doctormillar/abou t-this-project/

Padraig, I took part in the crowd funding of the following releases.

The Subscription Series by Martin Tielli of the Rheostatics ( Canadian band.) I had a long wait for this one. He released the first album in 2003 but the fourth and final disc did not see the light of day until 2009!!!!

A Month Of Unrequited Love by Michael Moeller of Moi Caprice ( Danish band.) Back in May 2011, Moeller released one song a day ( dealing with the subject of unrequited love ) as a digital download on his website. The songs were very well received and he eventually managed to get sufficient donations to release them as a double cd set and triple lp set. I have the cd.

I gave Marshall Crenshaw some money for his planned subscription EP series.

Felt pretty good to more or less directly support a guy whose music I've loved for so long.

I've backed Robert Gomez, one of my fave musicians.

The project is completed. I've received the vinyl and downloaded the tracks but haven't listened to it yet.

I helped with getting the last TrashCan Sinatras release (2009's "In The Music") out there. Think that the band hit a cash flow problem with the final production and asked via their site for people to effectively buy the release several months in advance. Got my name in the booklet with the CD !

The crowd funding of concerts and tours is an interesting development too. Jane Siberry is an example of an artist for whom you can organise a gig in your house or small venue. I know this because a friend of mine set up an evening with Siberry in her community centre in her area of Edinburgh. And it worked very well apparently.

I plan on contributing to this one when it goes live.

Davidson recorded and released three albums for the Janus label between 1971 and 1973. She recorded a fourth for them in 1974 but the label went out of business and it was never released. She was only 19 when she recorded her first album. She has finally managed to acquire the master tapes and is hoping to release all four albums on cd / digital download in the next couple of months.

Interesting Hugh. I never heard of her before. I swear she listened to Dusty Springfield as she cut her teeth. Very different vocal timbre of course but very similar technique. Her blue-eyed soul vocal delivery is unusual in country. I love "mismatches" like that.

Randy, I came across her for the first time back in the early 1970s. There were some really good Record Shops in Glasgow in those days and I managed to track down and purchase her three albums ( Baby; Backwoods Woman; Mountain Mama.) As I mentioned earlier, she recorded a fourth album in 1974 but her record label was in financial difficulty by that time and it was never released. Fourteen years passed before she put out another album ( Breaking All The Rules.) It is totally different in style from the three Janus albums having more of a soul / rock / pop sound which does not appeal to me as much as her earlier work. She only recently managed to track down the master tapes of the Janus albums which 'went missing' when the label collapsed. I have been praying for these re-issues for a long, long time and I am really looking forward to hearing the 'lost album.'

Signed up for the Doctor Millar project earlier today. Selected a less expensive package than Padraig but also made a donation.
