Songs - Malabar. Two songs in and it sounds very different to their previous incarnation. It's a harder sound and far less G-Betweensy.

The Replacements - Songs For Slim EP. It's not brilliant, but it is very good and it's the first new Replacements songs since 1990. Also, buying it will benefit Slim Dunlap's medical treatment. Now how about a re-union tour?

first cd of the skydog box. overwhelming.

from the outside the box looks (boringly-)normal, if you open the box you can find seven cd's, a duane allman pick, an interesting booklet and a skydog sticker embedded in golden velvet. nice. i am glad to have bought one of the last copies.

padraig, i read your post in the gigs 2013 thread: funny, today i received Jon Anderson's first solo album Olias of sunhillow. I bought the original gatefold album with the booklet. and it is the german issue, so that also a german translation of the story is included. that were the seventies where the record companies had much money :-)

Yes, they had a lot more money to spend back then Andreas. Even in the late 1990s they did too. Have you heard that a seven disc Fisherman's Blues box set is coming in October?

Padraig, Glad you like them. Check out their first three albums ( The Parish Of Arthritis; Five Die Filming This Lazy Lark; Benny Hill's Wardrobe ) if you get a chance. All of their releases are worth a listen but those three are my favourites.

An Horse - Walls

Second studio album by Kate Cooper and Damon Cox who hail from Brisbane, Australia.

Hungry KIds of Hungary

the band name is a bit silly. also the album names sonding a bit strange ( a parish of arthritis???). maybe that depends of my bad englsih resp. i don't know nothing about the band. nevertheless, i listened to 'set it right' on you tube and the song is an earcatcher. I will dig deeper.

Gene Clark -Here Tonight : White Light Demos
finally got hold of a copy which my son brought back from california with him yesterday, great to hear some new and very cool versions of these tracks, definitely worth getting for any GC fans on the board. Such a great singer and songwriter, less iconic and influential than Gram but much more talented

Let's Go Naked -- Emotion Engine.

Hugh, as you will recall the material on "Insides" spans over twenty years. The constant is Murray Power. Andrew Lofthouse is on approximately half of the material on "Insides." He is on "Emotion Engine." John Willsteed is also part of the band on the new album. (He played on one 1990 track on "Insides.")

On first listen this sounds like what I'd expect: the same vaguely Beatle-ish pop craft sense but with more consistency of feel thanks to everything having been recorded more or less at the same time. Naturally it cannot be quite as sensationally loaded with potent musical ideas as the anthology pulling together 20 years of Power's seldom-released recordings, but it's definitely very much worth getting. There is a new more ponderous sounding version of 2005's "Into the Night Sky." Tune in, Geoff, and I think Cosmo will get enjoyment out of this as well. If so, you'll want to reach back and pick up "Insides" also.

Felt -- The Pictorial Jackson Review.

The other purchase from Rough Trade East. I thought this was one of the Felt albums I'd not gotten, then after buying it I became convinced that I was mistaken and DID have it even though I didn't recognize any of the song titles. Upon getting home I find--whew!--my original idea was correct. I didn't have this record.

The Knife - "Shaking the Habitual"

Like "Silent Shout" a winningly weird combination of alt-ambient and teeth-rattling techno. Plus, there's a song called "Fracking Fluid Injection," which suggests at least a passing connection to the outside world.

The promise of Barbara was fulfilled with this rich stew of sardonic melancholy - best BS album I've heard so far. There's a female vocal on one track that's niggling me though - sounds very familiar. Thanks to Mr Nimmo for this one!

Stuart, Guest vocalists on two tracks. P.D. Wigg on 'Hairdo at 90' and Jan Griffiths on 'Flashing My Whip.' My guess is that you are referring to 'Flashing My Whip.' The following is taken from an interview with Simon Rivers on the Penny Black Music website.

" I'm always on the look out for unusual ways of doing things. I met a woman while delivering letters (I'm a postman), Jan Griffith who usually sings old wartime songs and convinced her to do a duet with me before I'd even heard her sing and it's one of my favourite things we've ever done ('Flashing my Whip' from the 'Five Die Filming This Lazy Lark' LP)."

Kieran Ryan's self-titled debut. Bernard Zuel's review in today's Sydney Morning Herald is spot on with the Triffids reference (based on the three songs I've heard on the CD so far).

I just checked out the Soft Pack link. Yes, very very David Kilgour/Clean. The song topic is amusing. We've often fantasized about it.

Bird Nest Roys - Bird Nest Roys

I am on a bit of a Flying Nun roll at the moment.

Not as well known as The Chills, The Bats, The Clean or The Verlaines but they are a band, who in my opinion, have stood the test of time. They only released a couple of singles, an ep and an album before disbanding. I would love to see Flying Nun release an anthology as I only have a copy of the album.

His cover of Under The Milky Way is better than his take on Closer To Fine.

Re the Bird Nest Roys, it seems that Flying Nun are about to issue their entire discography on cd and 2xLP Gatefold.
