Padraig, Check out Dumptruck. They formed in Boston in 1983 and released three albums between 1984 and 1987. Songs they recorded between 1988 and 1991 were eventually released in 1994 on a fourth album. Randy, I am assuming you have the LTM release. The label has a good reputation and I will be surprised if the sound on the cd is inferior in any way to that on the original vinyl which was released on Red Flame back in 1982. I would hate to think that LTM made a mess of the mastering particularly after going to the trouble of seeking out three additional tracks and five live recordings to add to the original release. I have the Lowlife reissues on LTM and the sound quality is very good in my opinion. Come and back me up Kevin. :-) Dave Jackson and Becky Stringer went on to form Benny Profane and then the Dead Cowboys after the demise of The Room. I suspect you may have something by Benny Profane. You haven't solved your puzzle Padraig. Austin has met Greg. You have met me. I haven't been to Chicago yet, Greg, though friends and I are discussing the possibility. For all we know we might be the same person and not even know it. If we appear in the same room, the building might pass through a worm hole. Or something. Hugh, I do have the LTM release. Maybe the original recordings were just very strangely engineered. Both the bass and the drums are ambitious in this band but the drums are recorded as if by Joe Meek with huge chunks of the frequency range rolled off. If I had nothing but time on my hands I'd copy every song onto my Roland and re-equalize everything to see if I can fix it. As it is I'll see if Apple's crude "treble boost" will help. I might even need to give it "bass boost" as well. It should be no surprise to you that I've never even heard of Benny Profane or Dead Cowboys. I got the Room disc because they are somebody Jeff has rated and while I will not always agree with him, he is a big 80s music freak and has led me to all sorts of interesting people. In the case of the Room, he long ago sent me the fabulously titled "Things Have Learnt to Walk That Ought to Crawl." Another tip of his that I pursued recently is Cowboy International. | ||

Randy, Red Flame was a small label who were only in existence for nine or ten years so perhaps The Room did not have much of a budget for their debut album which may explain why it sounds strangely engineered to you. I have no real experience in that field so, while I may at times dislike 'the sound' of an album, I do not always fully understand the reason why. I have to say I was surprised to learn that it was Jeff who rated and recommended the band to you. Spence posted a recommendation in a 'Song Of The Day' thread back in 2009 and, for some reason, I assumed that he was the one who introduced you to them. In the thread, he mentioned that the core members went on to form Benny Profane hence why I thought they might be familiar to you. He added that they were edgier than The Room but equally brilliant which I would not argue with. I like the Dead Cowboys but, the unlike the Room and Benny Profane, the music has ( on certain tracks ) quite a strong country influence. I will check out 'Cowboys International' in due course. Did you post about them earlier? I did a search but nothing came up despite the fact that I thought I saw something in an earlier thread. | ||

R.E.M. - Live In Greensboro (disc 2 of the 25th anniversary edition of Green). It sounds immense and magnificent, just as I recall them being when I saw them in Great Woods outside Boston earlier on that tour. Listening to this is taking me right back. Did we ever think we'd be listening to 25th anniversary editions of our favourite records from our formative years? One annoyance though is the sleeve note by Allan Jones of Uncut magazine. He refers to George Bush snr being president for eight years. No he wasn't. He lost to Clinton in 1992. The attempted era-setting portentousness of the Bush comment is entirely negated by the fact that Jones gets this basic fact wrong. Such things happen all to often in re-release and box set sleeve notes. Does no-one ever proof read these things? The music's great though! | ||

Greg, You were also at the 6/11/99 Grant and Robert gig @ The 7th House in Pontiac, MI as well? That is were Austin and our godd friend Cindy Gomez all met. Cindy and I drove to Chicago together for the Abbey Pub show. This has been a tough couple of months for me. My best bud Jim Hendry died of a heart attack at the age of 56 on Monday. His wife Suz will have him cremated and we will spread his ashes over his favorite wallyeye spot on Long Lake, which is south of Traverse City. My mom had a bad stroke and is recovering nicely, but we decided it was time to sell her condo (which we did) and she moved into an assisted living facilty yesterday. My dad was supposed to move in today, but continues to have diabetes related problems and slip away at a rehab facility. | ||
