My recommendation for the month: "Zoom" by Rachid Taha. I've enjoyed a lot of this France-based Algerian's music through the years, especially his recent stuff, but this one takes it up a slight notch higher. I'm not prepared to say it's my favorite album of the year but it's the one I've played the most. And Andrew, thanks a million for the heads up on the Mulcahy. I was a big Miracle Legion head back in the day (saw them maybe 4-5 times), and I'm delighted he's back in the saddle. | ||

Walking Concert - Run To Be Born. Has anyone else here ever heard this 2004 album? It's so good. There aren't many reviews of it that I could find, and none mention what seems to be obvious to me - this guy loves The Beatles! "This guy" being Walter Schreifels of Gorilla Biscuits and Rival Schools, among others. I saw Gorilla Biscuits in Cork in 1991. They were great. I felt a bit bad about drinking at the gig as I was told they were straightedge hardcore (ie no alcohol). | ||

Randy, 'Face Down Everybody Looks The Same' by The Bridge is now showing as 'Sold Out' on the Firestation Records website so you got your order in just in time. Do you have a copy of 'Long Ball Into Nowhere' by Hey Paulette? They are an Irish band who Padraig mentioned recently in the 'Whatcha Watchin' XVII' thread. Their retrospective collection ( 17 tracks ) has been 'Sold Out' on Firestation for some time but, when I last looked, there was a copy for sale on Discogs at a very reasonable price. I have used the seller ( Popkid1983 ) in the past and I am pretty sure he is the owner / one of the owners of Firestation Records. Quite strong Go-Betweens influences in some of their songs. With regards to Lower Plenty, both of the recordings are pretty lo-fi. I believe 'Mean' was recorded on four track. A few more examples of their music. Girls Names -- Dead to Me Same band, two years earlier. On the earlier album the music is rather C86-ish and the average song length is about 2:50. On the later album it's rather post-punk-ish with a dash of psych revival and the average song length is over four minutes if you factor out the 51 second intro. All very listenable. I always have to wonder a little about bands who seemingly choose their music like picking out what to wear from the closet. At least each album represents a coherent musical idea. Time will tell what I think of them down the road. | ||

Knievel -- Emerald City Believe it or not, this is easily the best of the three of their albums that I have. The approach hasn't really changed. The Brilliant Corners - Growing Up Absurd / What's In A Word / Fruit Machine. Songs from two mini albums and an ep collected on one disc ( 18 tracks in total.) Randy, 'A Girl Called Property' is an excellent song. Love the intro which runs for just over a minute before the vocals come in. 'One Of These Days' is also a cracking track. Hugh, one of the drawbacks to big long anthologies is that they hit you with a barrage of material all at once until you simply go numb. I had that problem with the Brilliant Corners Cherry Red CDs at first. In fact, for a few months I slagged off the "Somebody Up There Likes Me" material, thinking it fairly generic C86. I loved "Joyride" from the get-go though. Eventually I went back to "Somebody Up There" and of course found much to enjoy. This is one of the almost radio-ready standouts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtfMAp6sG 5o I say "almost" because, much like you noticed with the intro to "Girl Called Property", they aren't afraid to give their songs and arrangements a little breathing space which would be largely verboten for something playing on a Top 40 type radio station. | ||

Randy, I probably have a greater tolerance for sonic murk than you do. If there was a level below lo-fi then the majority of Huon, New Estate and Panel of Judges recordings would surely qualify with no difficulty whatsoever. I love all three bands as you well know. :-) I first became aware of the term lo-fi back in the early 1980s. At that time, it was mainly associated with recordings made on older equipment and in particular four track cassette technology ( Tascam.) Often out of neccessity, lo-fi recording of that era also seemed to coincide with a growth in highly polished, slick and frequently over produced recordings by bands signed to major labels which I quickly grew to loath. Things may have moved on since then but I still tend to use the term in relation to music recorded on fairly basic recording equipment ( by today's standards ) and in particular when the said recordings are done in one take and in a somewhat ramshackle manner. I believe 'Mean' was recorded on four track. 'Hard Rubbish' was recorded on eight track reel to reel. This is what the band had to say about that album. "We played the songs loosely around town in bits and pieces but nobody really new the songs that well. We went to my place with an eight-track reel-to-reel. Al and I sat down and worked out what was going on. The whole record is the first take. On one of the songs you can hear the reel run off. Then we just left it on the machine for like six months. [Laughs] So we actually recorded it this time last year. These things sometimes take a while." It is the best release by an Australian band I have come across in some considerable time. I am glad to hear you think it might turn out to be a grower. Currently listening to :- The Family Cat - Furthest From The Sun. Two Experimental Pop Band albums from the '90s: "Discgrotesque" and "Homesick." I'm disappointed by both of them. They're kind of white-boy hip hop. I doubt that they will grow on me though I am putting some of the tracks onto the iPod just in case. If they annoy me when they show up in shuffle mode, off they go. I also got some disappointing Jacques Dutronc albums from the early 1970s. 1970s records are always very high risk for me and I figured I'd be happy if half the music was good. I seriously like a healthy proportion of his '60s records but the '70s stuff is largely sappy MOR or occasionally graceless 70s hard rock or indulges in that dreadful peculiarly French novelty music--out comes the accordion!--that Dutronc always did from time to time, presumably to sell records. The latter stuff is what gave the French such a bad musical rep with Anglophones. One album ("1972") was so bad only two songs survived onto iTunes. I also listened to the Flatmates' Cherry Red comp. It's better than the Experimental Pop Band and Dutronc records but not in the upper half of 80s British indie music. It's a bit too chirpy and not particularly interesting in terms of arrangements on first listen. On the other hand, Barbara Carlotti's french translation of the Zombies' wonderful "A Rose for Emily" popped up on the iPod while in the car today. Lovely. | ||

I drafted a somewhat lengthy entry here and then the website locked up. Grrr. The short version is that I got another Experimental Pop Band album from 2003 about half of which I find enjoyable. I got a Shop Assistants comp which seems workmanlike rather than great. And Mina's 1975 "Mina Canta Lucio" album with its careful arrangements demonstrates the quality potential for records in the mid-70s whereas Jacques Dutronc's album from the same year is a sad example of some of the worst of 1975's musical aesthetics. | ||

I think 'Recorded Music Salon' which was released in 2000 on Drive-In Records ( U.S. Label ) is the least well publicised / hardest to find of their titles. Is it that one? Currently listening to :- The Paradise Motel - Oh Boy. |
