I'm looking forward to people watching on Queen St, Auckland on Friday week. Doing so from an open air cafe one January Friday in 1999 was an extraordinary experience. The joint was jumping; it was like watching a live action remake of OMC's How Bizarre video. The last time I was in Auckland (November 2002) I stayed in the burbs, this time I'm staying on Queen St. I don't imagine a cold winter's July Friday will be nearly as exciting as that hot, hot January Friday 14 years ago, but you never know. |

Padraig, new copies are hard to find as Firestation Records are 'Sold Out' and prices are rising for used copies. There is a 'Mint' copy for sale of Discogs. The seller is Popkid1983 who I have used a couple of times in the past. I cannot recall for certain but I believe Popkid1983 is the owner / one of the owners of Firestation Records. http://www.discogs.com/sell/list?release _id=2339076&ev=rb |

The Gilmore Girls - final season Ah, my life is a desert. How sad to say farewell to such a witty, brilliant series and its magnificent, career-defining central performance - I guess actors get a part and a programme like this once in a lifetime, and after that, really, it should just be a matter of quiet retirement and reflection. What after all was in store for Gandolfini if the poor guy hadn't died...some routine crap with CSI Kirkaldy or similar, apparently. Anyway, the wife is insisting I finally remove my reversed baseball hat... Will try to move on to the latest series of Spiral, with its own attention-grabbing female lead, but it won't be easy. |

Documentary 'Brisbane Bands' Part 1 here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kAr-dxqHa 2s Lots of G-B's stuff scattered through the 6 parts; I had never seen that promo for Toowong Records, with Grant recreating Dylan's 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' (the unreleased song sounds quite promising), a live 'The Wrong Road' shot in a club in Brisbane with some backstage footage, the 4 piece band miming to 'Lee Remick'... |

I first saw at least most of this a few years back but it's great to see again. Much as before my effort to find a suitable anthology with people such as the Riptides and Leftovers draws a blank. Grrrr. "Spring Rain" must have just about the greatest music video ever. It manages to pull together the exotic and the down home. It's certainly my favorite. fsh, "Heather's Gloves" is a lot of fun to watch. My guess is that it's full of film and/or literary allusion that I'm too ignorant to grasp. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it. Fun in any case. |

Switching between the rugby on Ten and the baseball on One. Love it when free-to-air TV (the only kind I've got) shows sports I actually like. And from Friday, SBS is going to be showing one A-League football game live every week too. |

Wow, the rugby league grand final was excellent. I generally find league a bit boring, but this was great. (Explainer for our American posters: the rugby I mentioned in the previous post is rugby union, which is a different sport to rugby league). |

The House Of Cards - the original British series. It's surprising how stagey British television drama was, even as recently as when this was made in the mid '90s. UK dramas have learned a lot from US shows since then (Spooks being the most obvious). The House Of Cards is still very good though. |

Masterchef Australia The most ebullient, supportive and educational of the international Mchef editions I've seen - great to watch judges that don't make use of unnecessary aggression and genuinely seem interested in seeing their contestants grow; while the participants themselves demonstrate amazing warmth and solidarity.Plus various trips around Oz to let us see how deliciously gorgeous the county is. Sydney looks green and lush; and there was even an excursion to a wee pub in Darlinghurst... |

We Free Kings "Easter Road" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQIwbvCd K-s If you want to know where Mike Scott got the idea of his 'Raggle Taggle Gypsies' sound from, look no further. To be fair, I doubt that Scott would deny that influence. One of the Kings (Colin Blakey) even joined the Waterboys for "Fisherman's Blues". If you lived in Edinburgh in the 80s, they were legendary, in terms of their live performances fusing folk and the Stooges. With cello, fiddle and accordeon thrown in ! One of those bands where sadly none of their handful of recordings do justice to their live sound...and we're just left with fragments and memories... ...a benefit for 'Friends of the Earth' at Carlton Studios, when the Waterboys turned up to play with the Kings. And a version of "Will the Circle be Unbroken"... |

RIP Chico Hamilton, jazz drummer and bandleader. He and his group featured in Alexander Mackendrick's wonderfully nasty film "The Sweet Smell of Success" I've always loved this performance from "Jazz on a Summer's Day" (with Eric Dolphy on flute) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CH0bG_OYd ec#t=160 Always wondered if Stephen Morris' drumming for Joy Division's "Atrocity Exhibition" was influenced by this ? |

Italian X-Factor TV highlight for the last couple of months. Since Italian TV is virtually constitutionally incapable of programming live music without some sort of competitive aspect anyway, this format is meat & drink to them and they have created a wonderfully watchable item, with an intelligent, measured, eloquent presenter, talented, witty judges and often intriguing musical choices for the participants – this season has included Blur, Syd Barret, Hole, Bon Iver, the Cure, Johnny Cash, Tom Waits, Janis Joplin, David Sylvain and Soundgarden, amongst others. New addition to the judging panel was Mika, not my favourite pop star, but charming, generous, smart as a whip, linguistically gifted, and with a substantial relish for popping the word “f***” in at odd intervals, like after the worthy Pussy Riot homage (“About f***ing time somebody did one!”). Last night’s stonkingly brilliant four hour finale was won, out of an exceptionally strong cast, by a doe-eyed, ridiculously articulate 18-year old lad from a wee town in Umbria, with such an unusual timbre of voice it’s impossible to describe, a sort of gentle burr that he can suddenly launch into an effective blues rasp. I look forward to hearing him again. |
