It's sounding lovely Hugh. Like a number of their songs this one sounds distinctly influenced by the Left Banke, not just because of the strings but also the choice of guitar and the way it's played. Merida double-tracked is a nice touch. Her careworn unpretty vocal style is probably the band's most willfully uncommercial feature.

I love "I Still Hear Your Voice at Night" in every way but was a little disappointed by "Australian Ghost Story" which, for me, suffered from the simpler sound. They tried the "In the Pines" approach of recording in a barn but it just didn't work for Paradise Motel nearly as well as it did for the Triffids.

It's truly wonderful that they're back to making records with such consistency. I don't know how much of an audience they have and I have to assume that the number of players makes them an expensive band to present, let alone support. Maybe we are all so in awe of them that there are no freeloaders and we all buy their records but still they must have day jobs.
