The Moody Blues -- In Search of the Lost Chord When I was a 12 year old I thought this was the greatest group on Earth. I bought this at the time as a new album. I faithfully purchased each successive album until they broke up in the mid-70s. I thought it was great that they explained that their music was all starting to sound the same, because even I thought so by the time of "Seventh Sojourn." The Moodies fell into disfavor with me not too long afterwards as I was getting more into 60s rock and the trashier corridors of '70s rock. I never did go for any of the officially Prog bands like Yes, Genesis or Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Listening to "In Search of the Lost Chord" all these years later it's interesting how many songs I simply didn't remember. There seem to be about four good songs and a few pleasant numbers and a handful of deeply silly ones. "Legend of a Mind" and "The Actor" are honestly great. "House of Four Doors" and "Om" are honestly absurd. There won't be a big Moody Blues revival at my house. My rediscovery of the three late-60s Savoy Brown records is not replicated here. Fun for the novelty value though. |

He recorded it in one night Hugh. It's just him and an acoustic guitar. It's selling for $10 both in the shops and on iTunes. The CD has one more track than the download version. |

Jae Laffer - When The Iron Glows Red. His voice is so distinctive, it naturally sounds like his day job with The Panics. Less lush, but sounds really good on first listen. |

A bit of "Einstein on the Beach." I've been invited to a performance this Sunday and I'm trying to decide whether to say "yes." I've always considered Phillip Glass totally overrated. |

I always think it's better to go in these cases, Randy, in the sense that going may result in something enlightening and fresh whereas not going simply leaves things are they are...even if in the end it simply reinforces your opinion of Glass. You never know though, live performance can make a difference. |

Actually, side one of that mix tape a friend sent to me back in 87 is so effing brilliant I think it's worth quoting in full: The Chills – Pink Frost, Rolling moon Doledrums The Triffids – Wide open road – Tender is the night The Housemartins – Flag day Giant Sand – Artists Jasmine Minks – Cold heart Primal Scream – It happens The Loft – Your door shines like gold Weather Prophets – Almost prayed Prefab Sprout – Lions in my own garden The Beloved – One hundred words He must've been smoking something good that day, because the sequencing works brilliantly. Only missing When morning comes to town to be absolutely perfect, maybe. |

I love "When Morning Comes to Town"! Stuart you have such a healthy attitude about experiences I feel ashamed. But I just couldn't see myself making it through four hours of the sort of thing I was hearing in the excerpts. One hour I could have handled, but not four. It's actually a big deal that "Einstein on the Beach" is being staged here but I felt sure another person would appreciate the experience much more than me so I opted out. |

Mark Kozelek & Desertshore CD arrived today, paid painfully large amount for this to win e-bay auction, worth every penny , still think this is the best album of 2013, current fave track Livingstone Bramble - Crazy Horse like grinder with brilliant and funny lyrics ' I can play like Fripp and Johnny Marr, I can play circles round Jay Farrar' |

Cosmo, I came across one for sale on eBay a couple of days ago. I last checked with four hours to go at which time the highest bid was approximately Ł26.00 ( not including the shipping charge from the U.S.A.) I suspect it probably went for more as there were several bidders. There is another one up on eBay at the moment. A U.K. Seller this time. The current bid is Ł5.06. A little over eight days left if anyone is interested. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mark-Kozelek-D esertshore-Mark-Kozelek-Desertshore-CD-N EW-SEALED-/271293988567?pt=UK_CDsDVDs_CD s_CDs_GL&hash=item3f2a61bed7 I e-mailed Caldo Verde a few days ago regarding the album and they replied stating that there are no current plans to manufacture any more copies. I paid over $60 Hugh! was just determined not to lose the bloody auction, there were no other copies on e-bay at the time, it's such a great album and although I had downloaded it (officially) it just isn't the same as having a hard copy. I also noticed that the CD sounds much better than the CD I burned from i-tunes. I am not enough of a tech head to understand why but it's a lot fresher sounding with clearer definition of instruments etc? |

Cosmo, I think anyone who wants one now is probably going to have pay throught the nose for it. Copies have started apearing on eBay and Discogs. This one has appeared on Discogs within the last 24 hours. US$52.15 plus shipping from an American Seller http://www.discogs.com/buy/CD/Mark-Kozel ek-Desertshore-Mark-Kozelek-Desertshore/ 122347419?ev=bp_rel_det I have no idea what Kozelek and Caldo Verde are playing at. The guy has a decent fan base ( Red House Painters; Sun Kil Moon; Mark Kozelek ) so why release in such a limited quantity? I think the bit rate of an actual cd is about 1141Kbps. I read somewhere that even if you select Apple Lossless in iTunes, the bit rate is only about 900Kbps. This may explain why the disc sounds fresher with clearer definition. I believe the default iTunes bit rate setting is pretty low ( MP3 quality.) Are you familiar with the Pinetop Seven? Currently listening to :- OP8 - Slush |

Randy, Next up in the Cloudberry Records Cake Kitchen Series will be 'Songs To Hover By Vol. 2.' by The Rileys. Should be out by the end of the year. It collects together most, if not all, of the tracks recorded by the band between 1990 and 1993 ( a mini album, an ep and a few singles.) Twenty one tracks in total. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xu7_FMOVo D4 There is also a MP3 sample posted on the Cloudberry website. http://www.cloudberryrecords.com/ |

Thanks for the info, Hugh. I'm sure to forget it by the end of the year though! Speaking of Cloudberry Records, my iPod has been inclined to pitch up the excellent Strange Idols song "He's Out Looking for Love" on a couple of occasions. Too obscure for youtube. In the meantime, I've ordered another CARE package from Firestation Records. |

I've already got it on order Padraig. I'm hoping he leans back on his folkie roots, which made him write songs like "I Give In." The last Panics album was mediocre. Sorry to hear about the Feverfew release Hugh. On the strength of your earlier post I was going to poke around this evening and see what I could find by them. |

Feverfew -- Something of Nothing Late 1980s from Reading, England. Many thanks to Hugh who located this out of print anthology consisting of tracks mostly released only as cassettes at the time. Not to be confused with a Brooklyn band of the same name. (I DID make that confusion and will eventually listen to their CD as well.) |

Will do Hugh. I think it's six CDs containing the Fisherman's Blues sessions, one CD of songs they were listening to at the time (country, gospel etc) and a vinyl copy of the original album (which I'm excited by as the one vinyl record I really regret selling was Fisherman's Blues). |

A package from Deutschland arrived on my doorstep today. No, silly, NOT some dubs of Angela Merkel phone conversations, but a stack of six reissues of obscure U.K. music from the wonderful music obsessives at Firestation Records. Playing For Time were mostly just too mainstream stylish pop for me. They are a seven-strong group from Hampshire with a couple of brass players and a female among their several singers that made me think of a 1980s update on groups like Amen Corner and the earlier incarnation of The Alan Bown Set even though neither of those groups had a woman in their ranks. I found five tracks I like very much and skipped the rest. But then . . . The Cherry Orchard -- These Restless Days (Recordings 1988 - 1990) An online search finds a group of this name from the late 1990s which is indeed a later iteration of the same band, still headed by singer/songwriter Jason Smith but with the addition of Sara Onyett as collaborator. This earlier group actually released a 7 inch, a 12 inch EP and an LP in the late 1980s. Here's something from the EP: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L0SAEPNem rU They had fairly straightforward musical objectives and might have been picked up by a major label but they weren't. You'll hear all sorts of elements in their music which suggest a much more mainstream act but the simple low budget production makes it work. So Firestation Records have pulled together those earlier released tracks as well as 8 additional unreleased tracks from the same period. Very much worthwhile. And I still have four other CDs from Firestation to unwrap. |

Digging further into my care package from Firestation Records . . . . Johnny Says Yeah! -- Friends Gone By 1986 - 1989 According to the notes this music was recorded "in an around the Fenlands of England." The reissue collection was remastered at 696 Holloway Road, a manageable jaunt up the road from Joe Meek's old apartment studio. |

Monochrome Set - Super Plastic City absolutely superb new album from Bid and the boys, they really do have a new lease of life since his illness and recovery and this is genuinely as good as their peak period output |

they reformed last year Randy and put out an album Platinum Coils which is also excellent, Bid had a brain aneurysm and nearly died and it inspired him to restart the MS. They have been performing and recording since. |

Black Box Recorder -- The Facts of Life Some time back I asked for advice about Luke Haines. Allen Belz sent me the entirety of this release. I enjoyed it but have only now finally gotten around to buying my own copy. This is a fine showcase of Haines' arch pop song craft--actually cowritten with John Moore on here--with vocals provided by someone (Sarah Nixey) MUCH easier to listen to. |

Hey, I agree with Padraig and Peter about a couple of upthread comments. Both Mikal Cronin - MCII And Minor Alps - Get There Are very good. The Minor Alps song "I Don't Know What To Do With My Hands" is a total earworm. Proceed at your own risk! |

The Jae Laffer solo album showed up today. Thank you Padraig for making me aware of it. Much as I hoped, it's a good solid record on first hearing. In certain ways it steps back a bit to how he (and the Panics) originally sounded. There's less gloss. |

Orbweaver - Loom another jewel of a suggestion from Mr Nimmo... a cool & lovely First Aid Kittish female voice balanced carefully over vaguely minimalist Morricone-like backdrops of guitar and trumpet...very very nice. |

Peter Gabriel - Us I've ignored almost all of PG's solo work, for some reason... well, you can't fit in everything. But Digging the dirt was on Italian X-factor and that convinced me to get Us: which is a beautiful, rich, layered work that deserves all the weighty praise the (strangely cool) Italian judges lathered it with. |
