Not front page news here in the US - or any news at all, really - but one of the great artists of African (and any) music died yesterday, the Congolese master Tabu Ley Rochereau. He recorded for decades, amassing something like 2,000 songs and 250 records. If that suggests a lack of quality control you'd be partially right, but check out "The Voice of Lightness" comps, volumes 1 and 2, and be amazed. It's transporting stuff. And he made an album with rival and follow soukous titan Franco that, depending on the day, might be my favorite ever, "Omona Wapi." Sad to know he's gone.

Rob, I checked him out yesterday and immediately ordered a copy of The Voice Of Lightness: Volume 2. Volume 1 is currently 'Out Of Print' but I have been in touch with Sterns Music and they are considering a repress due to demand. Fingers crossed.

Wow, Hugh. Can't believe Volume 1 is OOP! Sterns is a great label and I'd be surprised if they didn't work something out. You won't be disappointed in Volume 2, tho. It'll tide you over in the meantime. And maybe I can figure out a way to get you the first volume. I'm not the king of technology, but I have made use of Dropbox for these things.

Rob, It is amazing how quickly titles from some of the smaller labels go OOP these days. I buy a lot of stuff from Firestation Records in Germany and a recent release was all but sold out on Pre-Order!!!! I ordered a copy of Omona Wapi from AmazonCom earlier today and, with luck, it will arrive before Christmas. I have fired off a second e-mail to Sterns Music asking for a timescale for the repress. I will get back to you regarding your very kind offer if there is going to be a considerable delay in re-releasing it.
