Orange Juice - Blueboy Its energy remains undimmed as it clatters out of the speakers. Didn't one review say that Collins sounded like he was being garotted ? The Postcard catalogue is pretty untouchable (including the 45 by those Australian hippies, as Alan Horne referred to the G-Bs) |

Padraig - I was happy to hear it was produced by Jason Quever from Papercuts and he has done a fine job, there is a sonic depth to the songs, beautiful strings, layers of vocals and echoes of his Galaxie500 guitar days in there too...liking it more with every listen. The Field - Cupid's Head |

The Waterboys - Fisherman's blues Oh, of course I knew this one too, it was on an old cassette... how lovely to hear it roar out of the stereo at me and suddenly realise which song it was. Scott's book is perhaps the most joyous one I've read about the pure pleasure of music making and it's great to hear that the music itself bears this out. And recorded on that magical day, 23rd January, too. |

Stan Tracey - Starless and Bible Black http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Frnd-wuhB ic Perhaps the greatest British jazz pianist ever, he died on Friday. This is a simply beautiful piece of music with the Scot Bobby Wellins on tenor sax. |

That's stunning Andrew, not just for the piano but for the sax as well as the piece itself. I've just ordered a copy of "Under Milk Wood." Jazz is a big weak spot in my musical universe. I have an enormous proportion of Django Reinhardt's recordings and a respectable chunk of John Coltrane's but beyond that very little. |

Jazz is still a largely unknown music to me also Randy. Like you I have lots of Coltrane, the key Miles Davis recordings and I enjoy seeing the music played live. Abdullah Ibrahim (he was formerly called Dollar Brand), the South African pianist is another favourite and I've seen him live 3 times. A master, and his music reminds you of jazz's African roots. I'll put this classic of his (with Basil Coetzee on sax) up as song of the day. I think that this is the original version, as Ibrahim has revisited the tune several times Abdullah Ibrahim - Mannenberg PS All you would ever want to know about the piece and its significance is in this wonderful article http://www.africa.ufl.edu/asq/v9/v9i4a3. htm |

The further jazz moves away from actually sounding like jazz, the more I tend to like it... strangely, a couple of ex-girlfriends both ended up marrying jazz "afficionados" and, when mentioning this fact to me, both adopted the same tone of voice implying that, culturally speaking, this was a definite step up. That rich thrumming sax tone on the Milkwood piece is certainly heavenly, though. |

When I met the husbs, they were both tall, very neat, austere figures, with a taste for expensive jumpers and tweedy jackets. "So, what else do you listen to except jazz, then?" "Nothing." "Ah, ok." Conversation was a bit stilted thereafter, but then it usually is with exes' new men, I find. Meanwhile... Waterboys - Too close to heaven The great, epic version - there seem to be others coming up, but I have no idea which eventually made it on to the official albums - at track 22 of CD2 of the Fisherman's Box set. Working my way day by day through this cornucopia is an invigorating experience. |

Pádraig, You're a fan of The Fast Show's "Jazz Club" ? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TebUMhJAK SM Actually Joe Morello's drum solo on Dave Brubeck Quartet's (extended) 'Take Five' really does sound like someone pushed his kit down the stairs... I must admit that I have severe doubts that I can tell the difference between what constitutes 'good' and 'bad' jazz. Even with John Coltrane there are pieces that leave me completely baffled. I have problems playing jazz in the house as my partner says it irritates her and puts her on edge ! |

Waterboys - You in the sky On to CD 3 and this stunner, as the skinny lad from Edinburgh closes in on Dylan... "Thou art beautiful, and I am gifted, when in thy precious presence I am lifted..." Tremendous stuff. |

Stuart, I always have a hard time with songs using the ancient "thee" "thy" and "thou." Here's something I regard as a hidden jewel from the early 1970s which I've always had to love in spite of those stilted words. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz7kgaM2k nQ I believe this recording is just a demo. The simplicity of the arrangement is part of what makes it so beautiful. |

I know what you mean, Randy, but I think Mike was quoting from an old translation of an American Indian poem, so in that context I reckon he gets away with it. I think he drops the lines from a later version, which is a shame, since the hymnal tone works ok with the traditional feel of the tune. Mighty fine song, anyway. |

Holden - L'air de la vie Linking up slightly I guess with Andrew's post in the Reading thread...oh hey, this is very nice, with one of those sweet French female voices dancing pleasantly over guitar that wavers just this side of discordant, both almost going their own way but never quite succeeding. |

Song(s)of the morning (so far)... What a blissful start to the holidays... Neli Andreeva & the Shai Maestro Trio - Malka moma Jeanette Kohn - Maria Wiegenlied Mina Tindle - Pan First, Bulgarian singer Andreeva with a traditional folk song, backed by a jazz trio: and astonishigly beautiful it is too. Then classical soprano Kohn with a stunning rendition of Reger's lullaby for Maria. And then, more typically but still lovely, French indie artist Mina Tindle with a fresh, galloping little number. Ok, bring on the panettone! |

We're still in December here. Song of the day is: Visage -- In the Year 2525 This old chestnut from the late 1960s just can't go out of date. And Steve Strange & his famous buddies' cover arrangement fits the song even better than the original. Maybe the only thing that might have made it better is if the Associates had covered it. |
