Seeing him address an enormous crowd in Boston in the summer of 1990 was a very powerful and moving experience, which made a great impression on my young mind.

It's an overused cliche when used about most people, but in Nelson Mandela's case, truly we will not see his like again.

There is a very nice piece on the Boston visit here http://www.wbur.org/2013/12/06/nelson-ma ndela-boston-visit

Massachusetts was the first US sate to withdraw its pension funds from companies that were doing business in South Africa.

Paul Simon, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Stevie Wonder, Jackson Browne, Bobby McFerrin and many others performed that day in Boston.

That must have really been something Padraig. When I saw the news of his death yesterday it occurred to me that he is beyond argument the greatest man to live during my life time. He's probably also the greatest man to live in a long period preceding my life time. Gandhi would seem to be the only serious alternative.

I love taking these sorts of walks through the recent but already forgotten past. Here's a nice reality check on all the platitudes being pumped out right now:

That's a fine article Randy. David Stubbs is a great writer.
