I don't think I could scrape together even a top five this year, not having bought enough 2013 albums. But in any case, the Kozelek/Lavalle collaboration Perils from the Sea would certainly be in top place. At least, unlike the Desert Shore album, the record company was kind enough to make it available to purchasers. |

I thought I would be able to say that Dominique A's "Vers les Lueurs" trumps the rest but it turns out to be a very late 2012 release. I'm always very slow about buying new releases and have only picked up 9 2013 releases so far. As a contrast, I've gotten 17 2012 releases so far. The 2011 tally is 21 releases. The biggest disappointment in the 2013 group is Paradise Motel's "Oh Boy" on which it's clear that long-time vocalist Marida Sussex is being phased out. Her male replacement is not remotely equal to the task. Most of the other albums haven't been heard by me enough times to evaluate them, including Neko Case's new album, or the Drones, or Phosphorescent or even Wire. I agree with Cosmo, the Soft-Hearted Scientists put in a solid entry this year with "False Lights." Among the 2013 releases I still haven't heard enough times I can safely say that Jae Laffer's solo album is a pleasure. It revives what I liked about the earlier Panics records and what I found missing in their last album. |

Consistent with my own tendencies of taking my jolly sweet time to get things and absorb them, here are the 2012 releases that have scored best with me at least until I hear some others that I like even better: 1. Dominique A -- Vers les Lueurs. This is his greatest album since the blindingly brilliant "Remue." 2. Adele & Glenn -- Carrington Street. It's charming, unpretentious and wears very well. 3. Francoiz Breut -- La Chirurgie des Sentiments. I don't think it's as good as the previous "L'Aveuglette" but a medium Breut album is still very good and her records have a way of revealing their charms very slowly over time. 4. Paul Kelly -- Spring & Fall. Like Nick Cave, Paul Kelly drifts in and out of focus from one album to the next. This is one of his good ones. 5. Knievel -- Emerald City. This terminally bland group revived after many years' silence to make probably the only album of theirs that I honestly enjoy. A pleasant surprise. 6. Let's Go Naked -- Emotion Engine. Brisbane's secret wonder boy Murray Power has released his first album with this band after issuing an infrequent smattering of singles since the mid-1980s. I suspect that if I walked around town there and asked people about Power--even in hip zones like New Farm, Spring Hill and West End--I'd get blank stares. This is a satisfying album. Honorable mentions: The Walkmen's "Heaven" and First Aid Kit's "The Lion Roars." The big disappointment for me so far in the 2012 crop? The Leonard Cohen album. |

I'm struggling here too ! I can think of only 3 2013 releases that I've bought and one consists of rerecordings of old songs ! 1. Grand Corps Malade - Funambule Beautiful live version of 'Course contre la course' with the actor Richard Bohringer here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25MoY4KM ow8 2. The Apartments - Seven Songs 3. Edwyn Collins - Understated |

Favourite album this year is Public Service Broadcasting just for being a bit different, entertaining but also great to listen to. Other favourites for 2013 Yo La tango Wooden Shjips, mbv, Deerhunter, lanterns on the lake. I bought more music this year than for a good few years and also saw lots of good gigs, overall I would say 2013 was a very good year for music. |

And my favourite track of the year, outside of the albums above, is Ylvis - The Fox (What Does the Fox Say?). It's both comedic genius, and genuinely great Euro-disco. |

Padraig - you should have come to my son's school disco for 9-10 year olds -it goes down a storm there! Gering, ning, ning ning...! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jofNR_Wko CE Certainly worth a GB's lyrics thread style dissection - why does the Seal say ow ow ow! Is this a reference to culling? |

Think of the sound a seal makes when flapping his flippers in anticipation of a fish reward. I was discussing the lyrics of the song just this morning while walking to Fairlight harbour beach with my daughter. My favourite line is when he says of the fox: "You're my guardian angel." |
