Ron S. Peno & The Superstitions - Anywhere And Everything Is Bright. I like it a lot on first listen. More of a country/southern gothic influence than from his Died Pretty days. |

Cosmo, I know you are a fan of the Soft Hearted Scientists so here is a link to a YouTube video of Tynal Tywyll. They formed in Wales in 1984 and featured one Nathan Hall on lead guitar. Roque ( of Cloudberry Records ) reckons he is the same Nathan Hall who is now playing with the Soft Hearted Scientists. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4AHLIoez iw Link to an article on the band on the Cloudberry Records website. http://www.cloudberryrecords.com/blog/?p =2307 Currently listening to :- 50,000,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong - Baby Trash German band who released their one and only album in 1993 on the Marsh Marigold label. They also released the four track ep 'Enough' in 1992. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XIquqzChD Ao |

Houndstooth - Ride out the dark There's a nice combination here of dry female voice and skittering metallic guitar, all shuffling along pleasantly. No lyric leaps to the ear - it would be nice to hear a line snap out and hit you these days, but it hasn't happened for a while. |

Moby's latest, apparently, in an excellent Trieste music shop. Ok, it sounds like Screamadelica smoothed out and slowed down for the middle-aged, but, being middle-aged, I quite like it. So I ask the young assistant to chuck it in with the rest. "Oh, we just sold the last copy," she says, and smirks. Now, you see, no "Sorry, sir, we just sold..." AND a smirk!! Man, if I hadn't just spent an hour putting together a nice selection of stuff I'd have just left it there on the counter and walked huffily out. But I did give her a mighty dirty look. |

Steve Kilbey - "Miscellanea" Neil Finn - "Dizzy Heights" O.K. I'll kick off my first post for ages with a general rant! I've really tried to find something worthwhile in the Finn album. Answer? 3rd last and second last songs are about it. You hear the acoustic and orchestral only versions of the songs and they ARE very good. Listen to the album and you wonder where the hell the songs have gone. The arrangements are completely unsympathetic to the melodies. The bass playing is boring and POOR. I'm sorry Neil, but Linda McCartney could sing and play far better than your wife can play bass. Gormless. Now compare that to the Kilbey album. I thought it would be another "Garage Sutras", full of uncooked songs rushed out so that besotted fans could pay the looming electricity bill. Not so this time! A "Juliet Letters" style song, Harold Budd/Brian Eno stuff, Remindlessness stuff...not "Isidore" but pretty interesting to listen to, especially after forcing yourself to give Neil Finn yet ANOTHER spin because it can't be all that bad... can it? (IT CAN!) Look for the download on Bandcamp under Steve Kilbey. |

Stuart, what else did you get in Trieste from the record store clerk who doesn't realise records store desperately need repeat business? Geoff, I was a bit disappointed in the Neil Finn album too, but am hoping it will be a grower. Good point about the wife, unfortunately. |

Well, Padraig, it’s a nine-hour train ride, so I won’t be back there too often! Great city, though, like a hunk of Salzburg dragged down to the edge of the Adriatic. Anyway, much to my surprise, there were four Rene Aubry albums just waiting for me…never seen any of his stuff in Italy before! A French multi-instrumentalist & soundtrack & ballet composer – I’ve heard some of his music on the radio and liked it, so I thought, well, obviously destiny has willed these to me. I also got Kristofferson’s Closer to the bone, The Band’s Live at the Academy of Music, Vangelis’s Heaven & Hell and 10,00 Maniacs Original 5-Album box. There was a lot more I could have picked up but the wife was knocking at the window next to me and making “That’s enough” gestures… |
