Ah, hot summer days, eh? I've heard of such things. It's 5.20 here, pitch black, been raining off and on all day adding to the already flooded river. And I've got my first game of football (soccer) to work off a few of the Christmas calories. Then it'll be half a bottle of white wine or half a bottle of Bollinger champagne given to me by Michael Vaughn (ex-England cricket captain)! | ||

Sounds good Stuart. I bought four litres of grapefruit juice in the supermarket earlier. For some reason it's often hard to find in Australia. I guess even in the land of endless summer, some fruit can only be grown in season. Right now, I've just had a lovely cup of English breakfast tea. I prefer it to Irish breakfast tea. They are very similar in taste, but the English version is a touch stronger. (Although best of all is Barry's tea, which is blended in Cork from a mix of African and Indian leaves - but I have to travel a bit to find it in Sydney; and I do). | ||

Guinness, and lots of it. I was at an early celebration of St Patrick's Day with fellow Irish people and Irish Australians this evening. Such a cliche to be Irish, drinking Guinness in a Sydney Irish bar to celebrate St Patrick's Day. Nice though. | ||

What're we drinking? Probably too much! But if pushed, a Clare Valley Riesling - very nice. Though as a longtime Balmain Tigers fan ('Go Tigers!) I like the sound of Balmain Pilsner. During my time in Oz back in the day (the day being 1988, Go-Betweens at the Venue, Dee Why; the night of miracles with the Died Pretty et al; Ed Kuepper at the Kardomah Cafe - is it still there?; the Triffids at the Paddington RSL - happy days!) my drinks of choice were: VB, Resch's Pilsner, Wynn's Coonawarra Rhine Riesling... very happy days! | ||

Gallo Grenache Blush 2009 - I've been incapacitated for a week with bursitis of the hip (or greater trochanteric pain syndrome as they call it these days) and that was lurking in the back of a cupboard. Probably since somebody left it here in 2009. It's actually okay - I did think I might need to pour it down the sink. Henninger - now that's a good one (I'm in email contact with a German friend during the Germany-Ghana World Cup match - he's also drinking German beer) | ||

Lots of wines ( Gewurztraminer; Gruner Veltliner; Pinot Gris; Pinot Noir; Riesling; Sauvignon Blanc; Viogner ) produced by St. Clair Family Estate in New Zealand. A wonderful family owned company. Their Pioneer Block wines are superb. | ||

I'm not at all jealous, Hugh! maybe a little. Still have fond memories of cycling around NZ, which involved several winery visits. Very relaxed cycling. Not so keen on Sauvignon, but love a decent Riesling - good ones very expensive in the UK. | ||

Simon, I endeavour to source the majority of my wines from family owned estates / vineyards rather than the big conglomerates when I can. The only downside is that they can be expensive at times. St. Clair wines were on offer at Majestic Wine Warehouse recently and, even with good discounts, their Pioneer Block range was still expensive. Their Wairau Reserve Sauvignon Blanc costs about the same as Cloudy Bay!!!! Like you, I am also very fond of Riesling. | ||

I love that beer, Michael. It was the first Bell's product I ever tried. A few years ago they pulled out of Illinois in a dispute over our draconian distribution system. My ex-wife, who lives in Ann Arbor, used to bring me cases when she'd come to visit. Fortunately, smuggling is no longer necessary. | ||

JR Brewing's American Pale Ale from Oakley Park, Kells. 5.4% Gifted a starter Brewing Kit from my wife for Christmas last year... got some Bock and Sue Ellen Cider on the go but the aforementioned is the best to date. Heading to Oz for the first time in December and looking forward to visiting Little Creatures in Freemantle to sample their IPA. | ||
