Vangelis & Jon Anderson - So long ago, so clear

Along with stuff like Pale blue eyes & Borrowed tune, one of my favourite after-the-party "Why didn't she even speak to me?" Newcastle Brown-fuelled teenage tear-jerkers. Jon's singing is heavenly on this one.

The Clientele - Driving South (though it's a bit too much of a rip-off of Dear Prudence at times. Still, I don't suppose the Beatles' publishers will have noticed).

American Music Club - Johnny Mathis' Feet

There are certain days when I think that this song might just have the greatest lyrics ever written. Today is such a day !

I either can't recall that AMC song or have never heard it but I must admit that's a challenging title, Andrew...I am trying, and failing, to imagine what particular line the lyric might take. No, no idea. Off to Youtube!

Moby - Everything that rises.

Sounds like Mobe has been listening to early Vangelis, with big, simple-minded chords stretched out over a twitchy little theme on what seems to be sampled pots & pans percussion. Awfully addictive though.

Ligabue - Il sale della terra

Ligabue is one of Italy's gracefully ageing rockers who writes excellent, literate lyrics but has only about three tunes to recycle. This is a pretty decent riff though while the words are a fierce portrait of his country:

"We're the arrogance that has no fear,
We're the ones you mustn't ask for a receipt,
We're the captain who sails too close to shore,
We're the girl bending over to salute..."

Hi Hugh,

Be interested to hear what you make of them; my partner first heard them live on French radio (Bernard Lenoir of France Inter was a big fan) and we then bought the first LP. Still love it. Until recently I was always disappointed by "Stooping to Fit", but have been relistening to it and coming round to its charms. Amazing orchestral arrangements by Robert Kirby, that worked with Nick Drake. Darker and more "quirky". Pádraig rates the second release too I think ?

I don't know much of the Sleeping Years output, but like what I've heard so far.

Susan Sarandon - Toucha-toucha-toucha me

Ah, what a great pop song. And la Sarandon in her extremely perky prime.

Andrew, I have listened to quite a few Catchers tracks on YouTube and I am pretty sure I will enjoy the albums. I don't know anything about the Sleeping Years other than the fact that Dale Grundle is a member of the band. It was watching this video that encouraged me to purchase the album.
