Norah Jones - Sunrise

Woken up too early by the mutt and this was, suitably, playing in the bar as I yawned myself awake. A nice wee Sunday morning song.

Mark Kozelek - I can't live without my mother's love

MK seems to have reached that point in his artistic life where he feels, rightly, that lyrically everything is fair game, which has in turn opened up in him a rich vein of lyrical, in both senses, creativity, allowing him to venture into areas other songwriters might tend to ignore. Which results in great songs like this. Hope to be seeing him live in April, which will be my first concert in years.

Sun Kil Moon - Micheline

Stuart - there's an interview with Mark below, I was never a Red House Painters fan but his recent releases with Desertshore and Jimmy Lavelle have been intriguing...I will be delving deeper.
This arrived during the week with Chris Stamey and Minor Alps cds following steady streaming of Padraig's Best Of 2013 collection that i put together on Sonos.

I was never a big RHP fan either, Peter, mainly because I couldn't stand MK's godawful voice back then; but maturity has generated his present highly attractive deep, drawling tone, as well as a fresh, all-encompassing attitude towards songwriting, and this makes him a fascinating figure at the moment. I just hope the small Rome venue I'm going to see him at has proper seating for the elderly...

Sigh, Stuart. Have you reached that dreary phase? I recommend lots of beer so that the pain doesn't register until you walk out at the end of the show. Do you have to use earplugs yet? That's another dreary change, thankfully not needed for the more sensible of the older artists. (Bows down to Robert F, not for the first or the last time.)

I was a jogger for many years, Randy, until one day I woke up and found I couldn't get out of bed; and then that my knees & back were all the worse for wear. I'm ok just walking, but standing in one place, or stop/start locations like art galleries, can be agony. This is just Mark & his guitar, so earplugs shouldn't be necessary.I suspect he won't attract a horde of moshpitting youth, so with any luck I'll be able to sit and see; if not, sitting & listening will suffice. An abundance of alcohol, meanwhile, for a Scot out on the tiles, is a sine qua non.

The Lemonheads - If I Could Talk I'd Tell You. I've seen Lemonheads play it live, but Irish band The Revenants did an equally good live version of it. Neither beats the original studio version though.

Courtney Barnett - Being around

Evan's moment was so brief and so bright; surely it will come around again? Meanwhile, dirty fingernails and all, a beautifully simple song delivered beautifully and simply.

Out of the woodwork is probably my favourite on the album, musically the most interesting & lush, lots of nice vocal overlays going on; but it's the "breathing in" line from Avant gardener that I can't get out of my head. Anyway, good to have an album that, whenever I'm out, keeps me thinking, can't wait to get home and put it on again!

He had one of the greatest voices of his generation. He squandered it on cabaret and bodice ripper rubbish. He permed his hair, ground his hips and became a caricature of masculinity.

In his dotage he seeks redemption:

Randy, He still has a great voice for his age. I have just finished watching the semi finals of 'The Voice' on the BBC and his voice ( he sang with his two semi finalists ) was the best and most distinctive that I heard on the show. He certainly wasted his earlier career on caberet and crap songs but his last few albums show what could have been. I think a lot of the credit is due to his son who took over his management some years ago and who I think pushed him to record more challenging material.

The Harvest Ministers - A River Wedding. It sounds like a Robert song from Liberty Belle. Actually, it's more like a Grant song from Liberty Belle.
