I don't think I'd want to chop anything small while listening to the Buzzcocks. But listening while painting has been great. I've been bonding with both of the above albums. I've taken delivery of a full set of the Nightingales' post-reunion albums. Those, I suspect, will be significantly more cranky and angular. Possibly not the best for painting. However, I had a great time listening to the Fall's Hex Enduction Hour a few nights ago also while painting. I so seldom listen to full albums nowadays it was great to hear it. | ||

Stuart, I checked out a few tracks on YouTube after Randy posted and liked what I heard. Had a little search around online and found the Box Set on sale at AmazonCo for Ł13.47 ( it is now retailing for Ł17.80 ) and thought I would give it a go. I finished listening to Trouble-Fete a short time ago. Thought it was excellent. I have now moved on to Poor Madame X which I am enjoying even more. Just wish I could understand the lyrics. I have Baba Love, which is from much later in his career, on order. The rest of his back catalogue will follow in due course. | ||

Hugh, Stuart: I picked up four Arthur H albums including his first one ("Arthur H") from 1990, "Trouble Fete" from 1996, "Adieu Tristesse" from 2005, and "Baba Love" from 2011. It's my impression that a fair number of his records are live recordings. Much like Kevin I don't usually enjoy those as much as studio recordings. I tried to aim for studio albums. I found his first album to be a little too conservative and jazzy for my tastes but the reviews on Amazon warned me of this so I'm not complaining. The other three are all pretty good, including the newest one which is important of course. Now and then, he'll do what sound to me like novelty numbers and those I will skip but there are some really great songs here. He has a very "late night" feel. His own instrument is piano and that will often provide the foundation of the arrangements (though I find the bass to be the defining instrument on a number of my favorite tracks). | ||

Randy, I am very fond of Verone. Their two earlier albums ( Retour Au Zoo and La Fiancee Du Crocodile ) are well worth seeking out. Retour Au Zoo was released back in 2005 and it was another five years before La Fiancee Du Crocodile saw the light of day. There is very little online information available on the duo but it seems that they released a four track 7" vinyl ep ( Longer Lasting Beauty ) as Evergreen back in 1994. I have no idea what they were up to between 1994 and 2005. If you do go searching for the earlier albums, be aware that they released a three track ep entitled 'Retour Au Zoo' in 2004. | ||

This of the box on amazon.co.uk fits perfectly. I have the Originals, the renascent releases an now this box. Wow... When these albums were released by Renascent in the early 2000s, they came housed in what can only be considered as beautifully and careful packaging. Lyrics were produced along with the late Adrian Borland’s comments about songs. It was clear from the outset that Renascent’s aim was in creating lovely releases, similar to what, say, Postcard Records and Factory Records, had done. Yet, however, the sound (no pun intended) quality of those discs are flat sounding and there was no sparkle in the music. In fact, I had audio versions (TDK MA metal tapes) that my friend had applied some EQ on that sounded better. In fact, I could not listen to the Renascent discs at all despite admiring the presentation that housed the discs. This has now changed. Edsel have put together a box set of The Sound’s Warner Brother days and my goodness the music sounds clearer, balanced and full of sparkle: they even outperform the audio recordings that I had! Borland’s guitar is salient on all four discs, Mike Dudley’s drumming has depth, Graham Bailey’s bass can at times make floor vibrate (well I am playing them through my B & W AS2 subwoofer) and Colvin Mayers keyboards embroiders the music in a way that I have not heard before. Of course, there are niggles regarding what could have been included in the box set such as a replica of the full gatefold to Lions Mouth and the inner bag to Jeopardy. Also, it would be nice to have had the commentary by Borland found on the previous cd’s reproduced but that matters little compared to the music found on these discs. Phil Kinrade has done a remarkable job on these remasters and Edsel have done justice by housing the discs in a mini-lp format reproducing the original sleeves. In addition a booklet with words from Dudley and Bailey balances the box set out. For those who have the Renascent versions I would recommend this box set and for those in the unknown, go check out some music by the band and then buy this, you’ll love it. | ||

I saw those expensive vinyl packages when I visited the website Padraig. Very annoying indeed. Solo Spares is a download so why cannot I purchase same without the vinyl which I have no interest in. Not impressed with Flying Nun Records these days. Cannot remember the last time I purchased something directly from them. The Clergy - Glow. An album only released on cassette, 20+ years ago, by a band from the rural Queensland town of Rockhampton. One of them is now in Halfway with John Wilsteed. Halfway's last two albums were produced by Robert Forster. All the pieces fit. The Clergy album is great. A minor lost classic. | ||

Hugh, I've just sent an email to Flying Nun about this: Hi, are the Robert Scott b-sides disc and Solo Spares download going to be made available other than having to buy various vinyl formats of his new album? I would love to buy both of these as well as the new album, but can't afford to pay $80 to do so. It feels like you are trying to fleece the fans who love his music. Please tell me I'm wrong about that and that all three releases will be available to buy without having to buy vinyl I don't need and a tote bag (I don't know a single music fan who is excited by tote bags, so am mystified as to how they have become so ubiquitous in music releases).
