The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone. Great documentary, even if the band offers very little insight into why they are what they are.

Padraig, I've started watching the Fargo series too, after initial hesitation because the movie was so great. However, the TV show is great too!

Good Vibrations. It came out elsewhere in the world last year, but is coming out in Australia this week. I saw a preview of it last week. It's fantastic, up there with 24 Hour Party People as one of the greatest films ever made about pop music. Making a film set in Belfast in the late 1970s-early 1980s a feel good film takes some doing, but they've managed it. The scenes with The Undertones are in turn hilarious and beautifully poignant. Do not miss this.

Game of Thrones, season 4

Penultimate episode with another punch in the gut. Martin is brilliantly promiscuous at killing off his best characters. What a series though, real epic stuff. Peter Dinklage's trial scene saw an actor really coming into his teeth-bared roaring own.

I've watched three episodes of Swedish/Danish drama The Bridge on DVD and have just watched the first episode of its French/British remake The Tunnel on TV. There are enough differences that knowledge of the former is not spoiling the latter. Has anyone here seen the American/Mexican version, also called The Bridge?

Looks like the Suarez bite will enter Italian footballing mythology alongside the Zidane head-butt. But what a depressing show from the Italians. So who does that leave to shout for? Holland, perhaps - I was always a big Cruyff fan anyway...

Holland, maybe France. Italy's demise was nearly as sad as England's, but more surprising. As for Suarez, total madness...

But if France were to play Germany, I don't want the spirit of Schumacher to appear (the psycho goalkeeper, not the driver). That French team were a thing of beauty...

I confess I have no clue what you all are on about, other than that it is somehow associated with the World Cup games. If you're contemplating spending time in the homelands of some of the leading teams, Stuart I can recommend Argentina. They know how to turn every part of an animal into yummy goodness, have better cheeses than people realize and their wines are coming up (though still too boozy for my taste). Buenos Aires has some great art museums. If you're the hardy adventurer/explorer type--I am instead a classic cheese-eating book-reading pinkie finger snob--there's southern Patagonia. And the people? Well, their Argentines, 'nuff said.

Good match, Mexico - Holland. Two great goals and a gritty Dutch fight back. Robben magnificent. But don't too many teams depend on just one guy nowadays? And if he's not functioning, the whole team goes down?

It looks like it could be 2016 before we get to see Season 3. They commence filming in September, 2014, with an expected air date in Scandinavia starting in the Fall 2015.

Check out Spiral ( French Police / Legal Drama ) if you have not already done so. It is a decent show. Series 5 is being filmed at the moment.

"Swim Little Fish Swim" (Lola Bessis and Ruben Amar)

Seen in my local cinema yesterday with 5 (!) other customers.

Maximum tweeness alert !!! But something still likeable about it all. Themes ? Those wacky New York hipsters, life, art, growing up and responsibility ?

A third Scotsman to recommend Spiral. Less amazingly complex than the Bridge but with a similar ability to ground the stories with a group of believable, intriguing characters. Here, the profoundly exhausted, slyly ironic, workaholic investigating magistrate is my favourite. Paris fuzz, one notes, much more inclined to slap folk around than their Nordic counterparts. And you don't even get a glimpse of the Eiffel Tower until, I think, season 4.

I didn't notice either, but I'm from the other end of the island. I was just impressed at how like the real Undertones they looked.

Just watched Young Adult on TV. It's very good. Long time since I last watched a movie on TV. Australian commercial channels have so many ads it generally makes the process unbearable, but Young Adult is not a long film, so even with all the ads it was over in two hours.

A new Kate Bush documentary on BBC's iPlayer. It's great. How I wish I was seeing her in London this coming week. Anyone hereabouts going?

What I haven't been watching much of this year is F1 racing. They have a new engine package rule this year, only V6 engines with turbos. They sound bloody awful. F1 racing is so much about the screaming engines at high rev's, now with the new engines all that is gone.

I haven't been watching F1 this year either Michael. Or any other year.

World's most boring "sports":

1 Tennis
2 Formula 1 (or any other "motor sport")
3 Golf
4 Netball
5 Swimming (I love to swim, but have zero desire to watch anyone else do so)

"From Scotland with Love" documentary (made of beautiful archive footage) which was commissioned for the Commonwealth Games.

A lovely soundtrack by King Creosote. Kenny Anderson as first Minister of Culture in an independent Scotland ?

If I was still in Scotland, I just don't know how I would vote; like many people I suspect, my heart says YES, but the head says 'NO'. According to today's press reports and polls it is going to be very very close.

I know what you mean, Andrew... I could understand it if we were at least getting rid of the Royals, but the intention, even with a Yes, seems to be to hang on to the wretched buggers... meanwhile, I'm a bit vague as to what happens to our passports..

Hubert-Felix Thiefaine - Live at the Zenith

Featuring the ubiquitous leather troos of French guitar hero Yann Pechin & a rich horde of stunning songs... particularly like the Morricone-esque solo trumpet & acoustic guitar version of Etranger dans le glace, anthemic tongue twister Mathematiques Souterraines and gypsyish singalong Fille du coupeur de joints. Maybe HF should take a leaf out of Leonard Cohen's book - after all he cheekily nabs part of a famous LC tune for one song - & simply stand still looking cool in a good suit rather than leaping around in ungainly fashion, but, still, I think he is the real thing.

England playing 'football' against Switzerland. Or something resembling the game mastered by Germany and sundry other countries. Dreadful. Why do I put myself thorough such self-inflicted pain?!

Ah well, I'll pour myself a glass of Aussie cabernet sauvignon to cheer myself up...

Happy days, everybody!

Andrew, Stuart, fear not. The Orange Order and UKIP are each holding pro-union rallies in Edinburgh at the weekend. The reasoned, inclusive, well thought out logic they bring to any discussion will result in a massive no vote and save you from having to face the consequences of independence.

Breaking Bad – the End

Wow, I can imagine Shakespeare and John Webster high-fiving each other in heaven… has any other series maintained its initial promise so successfully & packed such a wallop? I am not accustomed to hugging chaps, but if I ever ran into Bryan Cranston he would get a most unpleasant surprise as an over-abundance of adoring Scotsman sprang upon him.

Stuart, I'm sure you understood my intention above, but just in case - I was being sarcastic. Scotland has an opportunity to vote for what too many other nations had to fight for. I know how I'd vote if I was in Scotland.
