To date I have only purchased 5 2014 vintage albums. I'm surprised nobody names Augie March's "Havens Dumb" on the list of good releases. I expect it to age well. But typically I buy albums from whenever. My total for 2013 is currently 17. 2012 is 18 and 2011 is 22. I haven't slowed down buying music which is new to me; I just find them slowly. And some things get shut out of the annual tally because the group in question is so obscure that it takes them years to see LP release. One of the new releases from 2013--I actually bought it that year--was a compilation of recordings by Ohio band Dub Noir from 2003 to 2006. I was reminded of it when searching my geeky computer database for 2014 releases. Some of you might know I'm a bit--ahem!--prejudiced against U.S. bands, the Walkmen being an honorable exception. All credit goes to Hugh Nimmo for making me aware of Dub Noir. I wish their song "Beneath the Wheel" was available on youtube but here's "Hey Sister" really letting their inner Go-Betweens escape: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OlAob6aC 110 The other song of theirs that shows up on youtube is a demo version of "The Careerist." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqlhrsHS ZIA Yes, they are very indebted to our GoBees, and "Hey Sister" and "The Careerist" are probably the most blatant about it. But, hey, what is wrong with choosing the Go-Betweens as your musical model? And I really wish youtube had "Beneath the Wheel" because it does a much better job of making the band's case. I should have raved about this group last year, particularly for the benefit of this board. Instead, I've been letting them quietly grow on me. Only 100 copies of the CD were released, but the download is still available. | ||

Happy New Year everyone! Given the fact that the thermostat read 56 degrees Fahrenheit in my house this morning (balmy for most of the Northerners but chilly for me!) I decided to stay in bed late and read the New York Times pop music critics' Top Ten lists for 2014 on my tablet. Of course this is the ultimate mainstream paper and you can't expect any of their critics to reach very deeply into the indie music world or touch anything I listen to. I found myself questioning the credibility of critics who could enthuse about hip hop, pop soul, country, rock and jazz. I also found it interesting that the reviews of the jazz artists were the only ones that made me interested in the records. These seemed to be more about the music I'd hear rather than the personalities of the artists. I wondered if this reflected the fact that the writers of those reviews only cared about the jazz releases and wrote about the more pop artists because that's their job which, unfortunately, was not jazz critic. It's a thankless job to be a music critic for a living. However much you might want to you can't just trash the things you are forced to listen to. It's only a minority of us who would appreciate being warned when an artist has made a lazy or uninteresting record. You've all read about the supposed transformation of Taylor Swift. John Caramanica, whose list makes clear that he really only listens to R & B and hip hop and related genres, still listed Swift's album as one of the year's top ten with this deliciously backhanded compliment: "This album’s biggest accomplishment is that in shifting from making the sort of music no one had really made before to making the sort of music many have made, Ms. Swift retained her self." Would you go out and buy the album? | ||

 I think it usually means something "good" here in the USA. It's something that one can't get out of one's mind. There's a well-known Cole Porter love song titled "I've Got You Under My Skin" which has also been theorized to be an ode to heroin. I bought the Wussy album and didn't listen to it for a week or so, but once I played it I became somewhat addicted... I think I played it four times in a row the first night I listened and that rarely happens with me anymore. | ||
