5 hand reel - The Earl o' Moray The perfect time of year for blasting out this soaring, epic version with Bobby Eaglesham singing his heart out and Dick Gaughan clanging mightily in on harmony - really, when two voices mesh as well as this, it was a real crime to break them up. Beautifully soulful whistle work too. |

Zaz - L'oiseau One of two beautiful little songs sung by Zaz on the Belle & Sebastian soundtrack, which also features the stunning scenery of Haute-Maurienne-Vanoise, a gorgeous mutt & the almost equally gorgeous Margaux Chatelier. Something for everyone, in other words. |

Steely Dan - Dirty work More soundtrack stuff - this sounded so good leaping out of the American Hustle soundtrack last night, swinging along salaciously with Amy Adams's hips. |

By the time I woke up this morning, the shootings at the offices of Charlie Hebdo in Paris were all over the news. At this point in my life Paris is my favorite city and the locale where this occurred is one heavily trodden by me. When I got into the car to drive to work, the iPod's little mechanical mind found the perfect balm for me: The Stranglers -- Always the Sun Sorry, both of the youtube versions I found are poor. |

Lucinda Williams - A cold day in hell Not such a great song, everything depending on her ever-deepening croaky drawl and the excellent grinding fuzz of the guitar solos; which will suffice. |

Neko Case - Local girl Now this, though the NC voice is far less distinctive than Lucinda's, really is a great song, making an impression even in the two-second glimpse of it I got on Dave Grohl's absorbing journey around several musically significant American cities. And good to hear backing vocals that absolutely count. |

Stuart, I've been raving about Neko Case for a number of years now. I enjoy her vocals but it's her songwriting that sometimes flattens me against the wall. Incidentally, she's toured with her backup singer for years. That's why they sound so unbelievably good together. |

Waterboys - Long strange golden road This was playing when I walked into the record shop on Saturday, which is the kind of sign I can never resist. It fairly bashes along, it does, with that rich organ sound pummeling it forwards and a bit of screeching guitar alongside, the most exhilerating ten minutes on the new album. Not a collection of great songs - Mike's been listening to a lot of Dylan, as usual - but overall a great sound. |

Stuart, I heard a stream of the album on Mojo's site and had much the same impression; it sounds great, though they are not necessarily all great songs. |

The Cure, A Night Like This, live at Glastonbury in 1986 (same year the Go-Betweens played). It rained heavily during their performance. |

Stuart, I bought the Waterboys album yesterday. It sounds better on the second listen. Beautiful Now is a great power pop song, which is not something I ever thought I'd hear The Waterboys do. |

Aphrodite's Child - the Four Horsemen Ahhh, Demis, had you retired after this album, what a cult hero you would be! Such a great, rich crazy mix of a work, fusing Greek song, pop & psychedelia. This particular track rounds off with one of my favourite guitar solos from the aptly named Silver Koulouris. |
