Several glasses of a lovely Médoc red - La Croix du Trale (2010) from the village of Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne. A family business, with now 3 generations involved. The wine was to accompany some mushrooms that a neighbour gave us. Following a couple of days of rain, the temperature has gone up again and now people are finding an abundance of cčpes in the woods! The streets of our village reek of mushrooms cooking... | ||

Yorkshire tea. It was mentioned in season one of Homeland as the favourite tea of the male lead. I presumed it was a made up thing, but then one day I saw it in my local supermarket. A very fine tipple for those of us who like our tea strong. | ||

A very fine local red. Château Larchčre 2011. It is classified as a "Monbazillac" wine, part of the Bergerac appellation. The area is more known for its sweet wine wine, but this red is outstanding. The producers have been organic since the end of the 80s. | ||

A beautiful Italian dry white wine...Ausonia Machaon Abruzzo Pecorino. All the better for being drunk on a lovely sunny day in Venice. My partner's family has Italian roots and we have been visiting relatives around Udine. What a wonderful welcome from the people here. Her grandfather and seven siblings all left from here for France in the 1930s. At the time it was difficult to find work and apparently refusal to sign up for fascist party membership didn't help much either ! Once more a reminder that Europe has always been a story of people on the move. | ||

Great story Andrew. It seems particularly apt right now. I am finishing up Tony Judt's majestic "Postwar." I'm afraid last night's wine for me was a restaurant's cheap house bottle they themselves call "Dago White." I spent a good chunk of the night with heartburn. |
