Hmm, Black Watch seems to have whizzed by me unnoticed. I've ordered a copy of "Amphetamines."

Bob Dylan - Tears of rage

Thinking about my godmother this morning brought the first six words of this to mind, one of the mightiest and most moving songs ever.

David Bowie - Dead Man Walking. I guess it's sort of modern Bowie, but it's 18 years old.

I just finished reading an article about the NYC cab authority dropping the requirement of learning the geography "because it's hard to attract drivers." Nowhere in this article did anyone suggest maybe PAYING DRIVERS MORE.

I adore McCarthy because (1) I really enjoy their luxuriant guitar pop sound and (2) their songs are more relevant with each and every passing day.

Michael Head & The Red Elastic Band - Velvets In The Dark, which is about listening to Velvet Underground in the dark. I think. Being Michael Head, I'm sure there is a strong subtext.

The Magic Words - Jonah (demo). The Magic Words is a Wussy spin-off and I picked this song because it mentions St Patrick's Day and my name is the Gaelic for Patrick and it's almost St Patrick's Day.

One Dove - Jolene. Taking a perfect Dolly Parton song and turning it into a perfect electronica/dance song takes some doing. One Dove managed it.

Warsaw Village Band - Ej ty, gburski synie

Exploring Polish pop rock without great results so far. Generic blues from the late 60s, run o’ the mill prog from the early 70s, death metal and a variety of other similarly gloomy sub-genres nowadays alongside doe-eyed cuties emerging from Pop Idol with soft-soully commercial stuff, sternly crackling industrial sounds that seem to have very little to do with music as I know it … hard to find anything that really gets the old blood churning. Warsaw VB is world-music/folk and quite interesting, though the female chanting is a bit wearing on some songs: thrilling trumpet on this one however, perhaps courtesy of Finnish/Swedish guests Hedningarna.

It's now Sunday in Australia, in Sydney anyway, so time for another song of the day.

Kovacs - My Love

Unlikely to find a song of the day on the one -piece-of-trash-after-another gym video show, but, hey, this skinhead Dutch lass has a great dark edge to her voice, there's a velvety tune (with a rhythmic bit snatched from Bizet I think) and even the visuals are pretty fresh. Enjoyable.

My iPod pitched this up today and it is my Song of the Day:

Lower Plenty -- Strange Beast

This dates from 2011. It's a fine example of the peculiarly Australian primitivo-desole sound. Masterful.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CDytJxkM cYE

As far as I know, Lower Plenty have 3 albums. This comes from the middle one.

Gorgeous! Proving my theory that there is no song that cannot be improved by the use of a) a trumpet b) a haunting female voice tracking the main vocal.
