The Apartments - Swap Places

The lyrics follow the same theme as '21'. Maybe we should debate as to whether artists should be this direct, in using their personal experiences ?

I think artists have to do what they have to do, Andrew. I guess if he has the guts to sing about this stuff we have to find the guts to listen to it. I know I couldn't get through the acoustic version of 21 I watched on Youtube, it was just too painful.

Being the old-fashioned sort, I'm still waiting for my CD of the new Apartments album to arrive. Hence I have not availed myself of the download.

But on the subject of whether artists should be direct in using their personal experiences, I remember the amazement I felt when I read the biography of Gene Clark and learned that what I had thought was abstract imagery in his 1967 classic "Echoes" (possibly my personal favorite song ever) was actually a pretty direct accounting of the contemporary Sunset Strip scene.

I look forward to hearing PMW's new work. If the entire set is about the loss of his son so be it.

Duran duran - Lay lady lay

Struth, who knew that the DDs did a version of this? Not me, obviously. Came on in the bar this morning, hooked me in with that nice scrapey guitar intro and, to the bar girls' amusement, I was soon singing along lustily. What a great song.

Kaleidoscope World - the Chills. Love the 'Space capsule/perhaps you'll' rhyme!

Not as bad as the Bangles' yen/krem-a-lin/Egyptian!

Antonello Venditti - Cosa avevi in mente

Another one for Padraig to safely ignore! But, ubiquitous on Italian radio at the moment, impossible to ignore here: not one of my favourite native singer/songwriters, AV, with his trembling Roman warble, but here he clamps some decent lyrics to an unshakeably shouty chorus and low-key electronics & piano in a highly attractive fashion.

Goran Kafjes Subtropic Arkestra - Yet again

After a bit of a dustup with the Uncut subscription team, who assured me it was impossible to send the CD to me along with the mag, a second copy of the mag arrived "under plain cover" as they used to say, with CD attached, including this marvellous brass-heavy instrumental version of the Grizzly Bear track, which really blew the cobwebs off the day for me. Glorious.

Stuart, in the years I had an Uncut subscription I got the CD sent to Australia, so I don't understand how they they're being difficult about sending it to Italy.

Copywrite problems, they tell me. Odd thing is, when I used to get it at my local newsagent's (where arrival was erratic and pricey, hence the subsrciption) the CD was always attached. And this month's is excellent too, with good stuff not just from GKSA but Torres, Villagers, Dean McPhee & This is the kit.

Goran Kafjes Subtropic Arkestra - Yet again

Living up to its title... this has to get played at least three times a day at the moment, with its nifty Smiths-style intro that suddenly bursts brassily into the perfect theme for an unmade cop series: grooves along perfectly, and then some unknown bass wind instrument growls in beautifully around 2.12. It all dashes forward, skirting prog & jazz while never losing sight of its melodic heart, and simply lifts the heart in the most marvellous way. 2 CDs en route.
