While We're Young. It's very good. Nice to see Dean Wareham of Luna having a cameo. I recognised him through his hybrid Sydney/New York accent (it's still very Sydney, despite him living in America since he was 14).

Sky Arts docs:

Iggy Pop - South Bank Show
Brian Eno - Arena: Another Green World
Lillian Roxon - Mother Of Rock

Lillian Roxon, I'd never heard of until seeing this documentary.

Aloha. What a piece of crap. It was even worse than I thought it would be. I only went because my daughter wanted to see it. Cameron Crowe will have a hard time financing his next film after this turkey. Utter rubbish.

Four weddings and a funeral

One of those films (see: Zulu, Day of the Jackal, Die Hard, Patton, Spartacus etc etc) that if I start watching the first 5 minutes I'll be stuck there until the end. I misremembered Richard Curtis as director, and was thinking what a good job he was doing so early in his career, but of course it was Mike Newall. Hugh Grant could simply have retired quietly after this, his later career seeming to add little. Crisp script, fine British comedy acting and made in six weeks for about three quid.

Jurassic World

Quite enjoyed this. Probably second only to the original. Although the irony of having an anti-corporate stance when filled with so many product placements seems to have been lost along the way.

Entourage. Rubbish. Far worse than I thought it would be, and I wasn't expecting much. Two terrible films in a week. I'm wondering if I'll ever see a good film again.

Power. A New York gangster TV show. It's a bit too referential to every other gangster show out there, but it's promising after two episodes.

Groundhog day.

A film I'd always presumed I'd seen, but actually hadn't, apart from the first 20 minutes or so. So it was a beautiful surprise to find that its initial premise is elegantly and wittily maintained right up to the end, that the sharp script has allowed it to age extremely well, that it delivers its graceful message quite discreetly without hammering anything home. In many ways, quite perfect.

Minions - pretty good not as funny as I'd hoped but at least I did n't fall asleep unlike all those Marvel/Superhero movies.

I'd vote for the Lego Movie as my favoutite kids movie for last few years that I've seen - not see Paddington yet though and expect this may run it close.

Aww, I love a Marvel superhero movie! Avengers: Age of Ultron was very good, but then it was from the guy who made Buffy!

Not seen the Minions or Lego movies, though.

Being of an age to see your favourite childhood superheroes come to something like real life is, I admit, pretty damn cool. At the moment I'm hoping the Netflix Daredevil will soon be available in some other format. And Guardians of the Galaxy is on TV tonight (though I wish they'd done the Steve Gerber originals instead). Will DC, meanwhile, ever get round to the Doom Patrol?

Since Disney snapped up the Marvel contract the super hero thing is a quagmire and is set for a further deluge.

Recently seen Syfy classics:

Fire Twister - Hilarious

Piranhaconda - Genre classic

I'm also genuinely enthused by the Fargo Season 2 teasers & the soon to be Sharknado 3.

Jindabyne - not really getting the slow-burning Aussie drama, but nice to hear 'Streets of Your Town' playing during one of the violent scenes.

I'm a huge fan of Aussie moves, from the genius of Mad Max 2, and the low-key original, to obscurities like Summerfield and End Play, but in spite of good performances I felt Jindabyne didn't really go anywhere.

The film "Mustang" by Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven.

Wonderful film, witha light touch despite the serious subject matter. In that sense it reminded me of "Timbuktu" that I saw in January. Great score by Warren Ellis of the Dirty Three.

It got reviewed by the Guardian during Cannes, but doesn't seem to have got a UK release. Here in France it has got great reviews and seems to be doing well at the box office too.

Pádraig

I just saw it this week. Yes powerful and very sad.

I've never really listened to her music, and am not entirely convinced by the claims of greatness...but on a human level it is extremely moving, but depressing. Watching someone who could be said to have it all, spiralling down like that is terrible.

I know that her father wasn't happy with the way that he is portrayed, but I think he gets off lightly. There is no mention of how he tried to launch his own singing career on the back of his daughter's fame for example.

And as for that husband...what a nasty piece of work he comes across as...

I have not seen it Padraig. Notwithstanding living in LA, I see an average of maybe 3 or 4 films per year. I hadn't thought about seeing the Winehouse biopic, not being a big fan of hers.

Andrew, I thought the husband came across far better than I'd expected. He just seemed a pathetic junkie. He was bad for Amy Winehouse, sure, but he'd have been bad for anyone. And if not him, she probably would have found someone else to encourage and indulge her addictions

Randy, I thought you were a big fan. I got the wrong idea somewhere along the line. See the film anyway. I'm almost certain you would like it. I'd say "love it" except it feels wrong to love something so genuinely tragic.

Simon, I'm delighted England is going to win the Ashes. Australia is the most nationalistic country I've ever known, particularly at sports, with the never ending "Aussie, Aussie, Aussie" chant. And yet when they had the chance to vote to become a republic in 1999 they instead voted to keep the queen. Pathetic. Well done England. At least you were a republic for a couple of decades in the 17th century. Australia has never been a republic.

First episode of BBC version of Nobb's novel "The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin".

Great as that adaptation was, the novels are even better.

Half an hour in the bar this morning reviewing the plot of True detective 2 over cappuccinos with the wife and not getting very far, though we still have two episodes to go. Often skating far too close to parody, especially the scenes with Vince & Colin in the bar and that godawful whining singer. No wonder they’re always just about the only customers. Vince and his wife meanwhile seem to have stepped out of a David Mamet script, though a pretty good one. Loved the mid-season unexpected shoot-out fiasco. Then it all gets a bit James Bondish later on. Best thing for me really is finally enjoying a Colin Farrell performance, reeking with despair.
