The Ballad of Red Buckets - Yo La Tengo

may be better than the original version they recorded. Off their most recent Fakebook like collection of covers and covers of their own songs.
Great live too this year in National Concert Hall, Dublin with original or early ?!? & very talented guitarist Dave Schramm in tow.

You beat me, Peter. I should have done a song of the day before I left for working this morning.

Peter, An excellent songwriter as well as a very talented guitarist. It was a sad day when he disbanded The Schramms.

My song(s) of the day.

David Bowie – Blackstar, the title and opening track of his new record. A powerful scene setter for what follows.

David Bowie - Life on Mars

Played on video in a mighty version by the organist at Glasgow's Kelvingrove art gallery. Exceptionally moving.

Is Rodin's The Thinker still on display at Kelvingrove? I loved that gallery on my one visit about 18 years ago.

Cool idea to have an organ in an art gallery. I've never been there, but shall certainly go on my next trip home.

Forgot the song...

Joe Gibbs - Tribesman Rockers

This was a tag-on my mate added to the Julia Holter album, so for a moment, caught up in the gorgeous eclecticism of her work, I was marvelling at her courage at ending with such a perfect replica of classic dub sounds. Then the penny dropped...

Hard to believe we're already half way through January.

Matthew E. White – Take Care My Baby. It was wonderful live tonight with two guitars, bass, drums and vocals, but the studio version has piano, strings and female backing vocals too.

Black - More Than The Sun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEah8Abv ltw

Just learnt than Colin Vearncombe is in an induced coma in Ireland following a car accident. Despite being only really known for "Wonderful Life" he has written many brilliant songs.

This is a great ballad that Scott Walker would have been proud to sing circa Scott 1 -4.

Tom T. Hall - That's How I Got To Memphis

So, farewell then, Newsroom. Sorkin off drugs (apparently) is perhaps a smidgen less brilliant than Sorkin on drugs, but still keeps you on your toes. And a good ear for the right song at the right moment.

Lucksmiths -- California in Popular Song

So who on here has raved about this band while I ignored them? Surely someone. I blundered onto this while looking for some other things.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH6Z_ShN C8M

I have a couple of CDs steaming their way to me, almost certainly to be followed by others.

Randy, They were mentioned quite often on the forum back around 2006 / 2008. This track from 'Warmer Corners' is one of my favourites.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AuTM2f1P gQc&index=2&list=RDLZj6er51KTU

The lead singer ( Tali White ) was also a member of The Guild League who released three albums between 2002 and 2008.

Matinee Recordings released albums by both bands in the U.S.A. and may still have stock of at least some of the titles.

Thank you for the info Hugh. I have ordered their 2008 album and also a collection of singles that dates from 1999. I will get "Warmer Corners" but the tracks I checked from it a few nights ago sound a little more influenced by Belle & Sebastian than is ideal.

Meanwhile I received my copy of an anthology of recordings by Czechoslovak group Mefisto. Most of the tracks are not-interesting covers but there are some good originals and this track which is what made me want the comp so badly in the first place. I only had a dub from scratchy vinyl previously.

Navrat Gemini (Return of Gemini)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IloFnUrP scA

From 1966 this is a celebration of a US space mission. I love its gorgeous concert grand piano sound. The Czechs were a different breed in the Warsaw Pact. No wonder the Soviets drove their tanks into Prague two years later.

Jefferson Starship - Miracles

Ok, this, as JS nudged dollarwards into Fleetwood Mac territory, is a bit typically Californian me-an-mah- speshul-lady gettin it on music with appropriately awful lyrics; but the tune unravels in such a beautiful way, Grace Slick's background "oh baby"s are so intense, and the harmonies are just gorgeous...

Jefferson Airplane - Martha

Huge fan of JA, and only heard today about Paul Kantner's death. A very sad day, as Jefferson Airplane were the soundtrack to my university years - 1981-85 - before I really discovered or fully appreciated the Go-Betweens.
