Damon Albarn - This is a Low (Live at Maida Vale) Obviously that overdone early Essex lad accent and air of bouncy buffoonery blinded me to Albarn's genius for the melancholy English ballad: and here's one in a delicious piano & strings solo version with, quite apart from the lovely tune and vocal, a cunning lyric yoking Eliotesque urban sadness to the evocative vocabulary of British radio's late-night shipping news. |

The Go-Betweens - Spring Rain (It's the first day of 'meteorological spring' - a term I'd not heard before today, and, well, it's been raining most of the day) |

Blur – This Is A Low. Inspired by Stuart's mention above. I've loved this song since I first heard it more than 20 years ago. Stuart, is the Albarn solo version available to buy anywhere, or are you just watching it on youtube? |

Just youtube, I'm afraid, Padraig! Seems to have been recorded for a BBC Britpop celebration programme or something. |

Miracle Legion - Homer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxmZbmrj 1wI The band are getting back together this summer for a few gigs...their gig in Islington in '92 was one of the best concerts I've ever seen. |

Nada Surf - Gold Sounds. An absolutely beautiful song about, so far as I can figure out, the singer's child. |

Blur - Caravan (live on Zoe Ball) This is a lovely loping tune from the excellent Think Tank album, but the album version, though it has some nice moody sax on it, also employs a bit of voice distortion, a pet hate of mine in modern music. So I'll take this ZB session track instead. |

Blur - New world towers One of the best things on the sprightly Magic Whip, linking a tune sounding vaguely like an old English folk song to the lyrics' spectral description of isolation amongst the modern orient's urban skyscrapers. |

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever A prime example of the late George Martin's work with the Fab Four. How they progressed from '62 to '65 and beyond has never been matched by any other group. And quite possibly will never be now ? And George Martin helped transform so many of their ideas into reality. And "Always looking and sounding as if he had just stepped down from his Spitfire cockpit" as Ringo said. |

I'll go for this, one of my favourite soundtracks... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hD9N5YTn pzU "McCartney's involvement in the project was minimal, according to biographer Howard Sounes, who quotes Martin's recollection that he had to "pester Paul for the briefest scrap of a tune" with which to start writing the score. After McCartney had provided "a sweet little fragment of a waltz tune", Martin continued, "I was able to complete the score."[ |

The Beatles - Paperback Writer (very minor claim to fame - I met George Martin, along with Paul and Linda McCartney, and Peter Blake many years ago. Spent most time chatting with Peter Blake, not sure many knew who he was, but Paul in particular was lovely and charming.) |

ELP - Lucky Man Dear heavens, nothing but tributes these days! My early teens, when I first got into music in a big way, were almost all prog, so I had about everything by Keith & the lads, but their debut was always one of my favourites, and Greg Lake could usually be relied on to strum out a nice ballad or two, like this one - straightforward melodic rock pop till the moog bursts in peremptorily towards the end. |

Wow, I haven't heard Lucky Man in decades! I remember it was the only thing by EL&P that I liked. "Oh what a lucky man he was." |

Meanwhile my song for the day is: Vermont Sugar House--Technicolor Memories (P.S. We Love You) Another of many Hugh Nimmo recommendations for me, this one is an orgy of gorgeous compressed sound. |

It's Thursday in Sydney, so time for a new song of the day. The Feelies – Doin' It Again. I've loved this song since I first heard it in 1992. Happy St Patrick's Day. |

The Goon Sax – Home Haircuts. If Lou Reed had obsessed over his hair rather everything else he obsessed over, VU might have made a song like this. But it wouldn't have been as funny. |
