Damon Albarn - This is a Low (Live at Maida Vale) Obviously that overdone early Essex lad accent and air of bouncy buffoonery blinded me to Albarn's genius for the melancholy English ballad: and here's one in a delicious piano & strings solo version with, quite apart from the lovely tune and vocal, a cunning lyric yoking Eliotesque urban sadness to the evocative vocabulary of British radio's late-night shipping news. | ||

The Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever A prime example of the late George Martin's work with the Fab Four. How they progressed from '62 to '65 and beyond has never been matched by any other group. And quite possibly will never be now ? And George Martin helped transform so many of their ideas into reality. My early teens, when I first got into music in a big way, were almost all prog, so I had about everything by Keith & the lads, but their debut was always one of my favourites, and Greg Lake could usually be relied on to strum out a nice ballad or two, like this one - straightforward melodic rock pop till the moog bursts in peremptorily towards the end. | ||
