It being Easter, I'm indulging in both the religious and secular aspects of the season.

Religious: Listening to John Debney's stunning soundtrack to The Passion Of The Christ, and Peter Gabriel's even more stunning Passion: Music For The Last Temptation Of Christ. The devil might have all the best songs, but he does not have the best soundtracks. If Gabriel hadn't written his soundtrack using middle eastern music I don't think Debney would have been able to write his with similar influences. It's a great thing that he did.

Secular: The chocolate Easter bunny I've just devoured. Sacrilicious.

Francoiz Breut -- Zoo

New album, her sixth. It is very promising on two listens so far. By this point in time I've learned to trust her. I was originally a bit lukewarm on her last album La Chirurgie des Sentiments but found myself appreciating it a lot more over time other than perhaps a rather uninspiring mastering job. She never likes to make the same album twice and this one sounds a good deal different than La Chirurgie, though I expect both of them had equally lower production budgets as compared to her early years when Dominique A was involved. The only track which clunks for me is "Morlocks und die Streunerin" which just doesn't have enough going on musically for my taste and is spoken im Deutsch by Francoiz instead of delivered in her usual wonderful diffident almost offhand singing. The arrangements are comparatively uncluttered this time around and more keyboard-based than on many of her albums. You'll hear Farfisa but don't expect a novelty new-wave revival. Mastering quality is better than on her last album and I suspect that I'll find little surprises popping up on repeated listens.

Paco de Lucia – Entros dos aguas

Something about an expertly played acoustic guitar I find both exhilarating and relaxing.

Pádraig, it is a nice one alright - though my favourite from that time is the previous one 'Cover'. Some great pop songs on that one.

The band name above should say Revolino, same as the title. Damn auto-correct.

Weezer – Weezer (The White Album). Partying like it was 1994.

Cathal Smyth – A Comfortable Man. Absolutely stunning. I've had it for a while but this is my first time playing it. I can tell from first listen that it's a classic. The whole thing is a break-up album. I was in tears at some of the lyrics. It's so raw, but so cathartic and brilliant. The music is worthy of the lyrics. I wonder if his wife thought about taking him back after hearing an album of songs about how great she is and how sorry he is. It's powerful stuff.

Pierce Turner - Tantum Ergo

There's always a bit of Latin in each Pierce Turner Album.

Tantum ergo Sacramentum
Veneremur cernui:
Et antiquum documentum
Novo cedat ritui:

The Necks - Sex. Australian, 1989, one track, 56 minutes, jazz, genius.

Spent the evening listening to Auguri by Dominique A, whom I'd never heard of before reading some recent comments here. Excellent stuff. I'm looking forward to listening to more.

Pierce Turner **
3 Minute World
Punctual Records
He’s held in high esteem by those who’ve loved his work for years. This, though, is the first time I’ve heard a full album by him and, at the risk of sounding like an eejit who just doesn’t get it, I just don’t get it. It’s not awful, but it’s not inspired either. It starts well with Sunday, which has the sound and lyrical style of Beach Boys circa Smiley Smile. But Busy is a mess, crossing Brecht and Weil with Blur. Ball And Chain is as close as it gets to conventional pop, but it’s unlikely to trouble the charts. One for converts.

A mix CD I made a few years ago and titled The Godlike Genius Of Damon Albarn. I thought I'd lost it, but found it in a box when looking for something else. Happy days. It has aspects from throughout his career, from Blur, to solo, to Gorrilaz, to Chinese opera and Malian. The title is apposite.

Would that I had a track list, Stuart. It's just a disc with the title I gave it. Next time I play it I'll try to name them, but there are 23 tracks and many are pretty obscure ones from his vinyl only first solo album, Mali Music, The Good, The Bad & The Queen, a duet with Ray Davies (OK, that one is Waterloo Sunset), Monkey: Journey To The West, Gorillaz and Blur b-sides. But I'll try.

Will have to check that out Hugh.

Now that I'm back home with access to a stereo I'm playing my haul from my visit to Rough Trade East.

UV Pop--No Songs Tomorrow

Early 80s, low budget postpunk from South Yorkshire. Think of drum machines and cheap keyboards but surprisingly there's occasionally acoustic guitar, not a typical post-punk instrument. The best of this is sounding pretty good to me.

Cichli, I'm both glad to see you on here again and also checking out Dom A. He's made a lot of records due to the length of his career. They started out pretty primitive with cheap keyboards, drum machine and guitar and were often more twee than anything else. Then he started to develop. At this point now he'll do records with orchestration. No idea how you feel about that kind of thing. But if you like Auguri I can confidently recommend you to "Remue" which (I think, too lazy to go look right now) dates from a couple years before Auguri. And, oh jeez, the crazy groove of "La Vie Rend Modeste" from "La Memoire Neuve." If you find you keep enjoying what you hear you'll probably find much to enjoy right along the line from the early super primitivo stuff to the elegiac Euro-ballad he opens "Eleor" with, called "Cap Farvel." He did that at the show, possibly as the opener but I can't quite remember. It was ravishing sans orchestra and it's also ravishing on the record with orchestra and the great flat-picked bass guitar underpinning it.

In between "Eleor" and the older music you've heard, there's his electronic "La Musique" (which I think loses steam about hald way through, but deserves another proper all ears listen) and his jaw-droppingly brilliant-from-front-to-back rock as if arranged by Erik Satie on his second to latest album, "Vers les Lueurs." He takes french musical tradition and slots it into the 21st Century. Just a lot of really great records.

Randy, Nothing earth shattering but a complete collection by a New Zealand band who only existed for a short period of time in the late 1980s. You might also want to checkout the following if you have not already done so.

Flemming Borby ( aka Labrador ) - Somebody Wrong

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agfaQJrD 1Lg

Not quite sure why he has decided to release his latest album under his own name given that all his previous releases were put out under the moniker of Labrador.

A Dead Forest Index - Myth Retraced

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja3IyLo8 Qu0

Touring on the back of the release of their debut album 'In All That Drifts From Summit Down. I don't know how interesting a two piece band ( guitar and percussion ) will sound live but for me they are one of the most interesting Australian artists I have come across in quite some time. Performing at the Teragram Ballroom, Los Angeles, on 6th and 7th June, 2016. I am guessing you don't get a great opportunity to see young Australian and New Zealand artists in your neck of the woods very often so it might be worth taking the risk. I know I would chance it if they were appearing anywhere near me.

Hugh, I can always count on you to make me aware of things. I am already aware of Dead Forest Index, thanks to you. I didn't know they were playing in LA (and have never heard of Teragram Ballroom but it's a big city and there's always a new place opening somewhere). I didn't know they were only a two-piece. I hope that doesn't mean they overdo it with electronic effects like digital loop boxes, but whatever. If I don't have a calendar conflict I'll check them out.

The Borby song sounds great. Maybe he's reached the point where he wants people to know who he is.

Randy, many thanks for the recommendations. I'm already listening to Remue and loving it. Orchestration is fine by me. Dominique A fits in with my liking of Scott Walker, early Roxy music, Jacques Brel. I wish my French were better. I find myself singing along in melodic gibberish.

Pádraig, 3 Minute World isn't one of my favourites, though I do like it. I think a lot of people don't 'get' Pierce Turner because he is impossible to label. Look at the allmusic bio for him mentioning Van Morrison and Elvis Costello - I can't see any resemblance. Likewise, I reckon the Blur and Brecht and Weill reference might be lost to the man himself. He's not rock and roll; he's closer to art-music - yet his live performances are more like music hall.
As one of the few good musical things to come out of Wexford, my home town, I think he's great.

G.W. McLennan – Live Last Monday. A wonderful, five song EP only ever released on cassette, which was given away free with a single in 1991. The sound is not very good, but I imagine that's at least partly because of the format it was released on. Hopefully the full show will be released on CD one day.

Miles Davis – Aura. I've loved this album since I first bought it on cassette in 1989 or 1990 when I was living in Boston. Haven't played it in years. I was reminded of it by Bardo Pond's Record Store Day release where the track titles are also all colours, four of which are the same as track titles on Aura. I presume Bardo Pond are aware of Aura.

I am curious what other board members think of the Goon Sax album. I like it. It is very Jonathan Richman, which is interesting because the Go-Betweens almost recorded with Beserkley Records. But Louis Forster has talent.

Listening to Dexys Midnight Runners' Don't Stand Me Down. I bought the vinyl version last week, but I haven't played it yet. I'm listening to mp3s. An unbridled classic, which is what I've thought since I first bought it on Brazilian-edition cassette for 99p 21 years ago. Best 99p I ever spent on music. Though, of course, I subsequently bought the CD version and now the vinyl too.

Bob Dylan – The Witmark Demos. How fortunate we are to be able to hear these more than 50 years after they were recorded, never designed for commercial release.

My fairly knacked vinyl copy of the Stones' "Exile on Main Street". Play loud ! Who cares about the odd click when Keith's guitar sounds that good on "Happy".

Melody Pool – Deep Dark Savage Heart. An intense young Australian woman. First time playing it. I'm halfway through and it sounds great so far. The track Black Dog rips its melody off from a Leonard Cohen song (though exactly which one escapes me right now), but at least it takes it somewhere interesting – a country soul direction. And how Triffidsish is that album title? I think David McComb would have approved.

A great debut album at the fresh age of 53, saw David Corley with a 5 piece band that included Cait O Riordan on bass in a jam packed back room of a bar in Kilkenny last weekend... classic stuff

Me And Dean Martin - Let's Romanticise Our Youth

The above was to have been the band's third single but they called it a day before it was released.

The Beloved – Blissed Out (The Remixes). I'm listening to the cassette version, which has five extra tracks that, as far as I know, have never been released on CD.

Chaka Khan – I Feel For You 12". I was in high school when this came out and loved it. People thought I was being ironic because I was a metalhead. I wasn't.

Underminers – Beyond The Stars. Long time since I've played this. I came across it while looking for something else.

Sudden Sway -- Early Rarities Collection. Prior to this I'd only heard their ironic synth opera classic "'76 Kids Forever" and a tiny handful of later tracks sent to me by Spence. Who'd-a-thunk they started out as a post-punk band with normal instrumentation, guitars and all?

Hugh, I've also received the latest Firestation CARE package. I haven't gotten to Me and Dean Martin yet but am quite impressed with the quality of Endless Bob Brown, even though it's all demos.

Lacey Jones – Laney Jones. Indie, with a twist. The twist being she studied composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Many's the night I spent listening to Berklee students playing at Wally's Jazz Cafe in Boston.

The woman's name is Laney, not Lacey. Damn autocorrect thinking it's smarter than me.

A rather wonderful Japanese Laura Nyro compilation called Premium Best. The world would be a much better place if more best ofs were called Premium Best.

The Riptides -- Tombs of Gold

For some incomprehensible reason this classic early 80s Aussie retro band never received the proper CD reissue/anthology treatment. This one comes on vinyl. Red vinyl!

This album is a collection of singles. I hope it is ultimately released on CD. It's great that I can listen to it but I've had to go to some $$$ lengths to provide myself with the ability to listen to good quality vinyl, and the freshly-rebuilt vintage preamp's phono circuitry is giving trouble so I will have go through some more bother to fix that. Nowadays vinyl is a medium for the pinkie fingered well heeled.

Randy, It is available on cd with an additional 8 tracks.

http://the-riptides.myshopify.com/produc ts/tombs-of-gold-cd

Probably best to purchase via the band's website as apparently there was a problem with the intial batch ( three tracks were remastered at the wrong speed.)

Sorry to hear that your preamp is acting up.

Ike Reilly - Born On Fire. A Wisconsin singer/songwriter who's a friend of a friend. I've known his music for more than a quarter century. I bought it from iTunes. The title track is about Chris Farley, who was another friend of my mate and Ike's. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wzneDFB CeE

I think Ike lives up north not too far from the Wisconsin border. Given the fact you're on the other side of the world I forgive you for a 30-mile geographical error, PC : ) Glad you know about him. He's been a staple around here for a long time.

My friend and Ike, along with Chris Farley and Pat Finn, all went to Marquette University together in the 1980s. I think they were all involved with the rugby team too.
