I rarely go to gigs but for some reason when I was living in Stockholm I picked up a ticket for the Sign o’ the times tour. I probably had a cassette or two of that marvellous run of albums in the 80s but I was hardly a fan. But the concert turned out to be one of the most exhilarating musical experiences of my life, a big, brash, sexy tour-de-force where his guitar playing was glorious to behold: he was one of those players who seemed to be have been born with the thing slung around him, so gracefully and intuitively was he at one with it. He danced and sang for the whole evening, an amazing source of flair, wit and energy. I often feel a bit detached at gigs, not particularly involved, but here I just sat grinning ear to ear till with one last dazzling solo he skipped from the stage. I left the stadium with that strange, airy, slightly shaky walk only a really great concert can induce. But I haven’t bought anything by him since Alphabet Street, and have no idea what he’s been turning out for the last twenty or so years. | ||

When I saw him in Sydney Cricket Ground in May 1992 it was a Sunday evening and I had been in bed all day with a blinding headache. Only for the fact the ticket cost so much (it was $45 and I thought never in my life would I pay so much for a concert again...) I would not have gone. I still had the headache when I got there, but Prince took care of that. | ||

I saw Prince maybe eight or nine times, including a secret, pop-up concert that turned out to be a kick-off for his "Purple Rain" tour. I feel pretty comfortable calling him the most consequential musician of my generation. Stuart, if you're interested, check out "The Gold Experience," "3121" and "Musicology." We will not see his like again. |
