Miossec - La melancolie An artist who rarely disappoints, on his sixth album Miossec seems to be going for the big pop experience, with adventurous instrumentation and lashings of strings and brass. It may not quite reach the heights of his inspired classic 1964, but still a great listen. His voice has all the melodic range of a rusted-up lawnmower ploughing through rubble, but the Battistiesque choral coda to this song is a joy. | ||

Rocketsong - Robert Forster. What could be better than the combination of Thomas Pynchon & Robert Forster. I have not seen the film (Prufstand VII), but it is only listing of the real Robert Forster in the IMDB as a actor in the role of Farhrmann (Ferryman). The youtube trailer for the film is wacky (Robert in a boat in his yellow suit and a cape singing the song). | ||

TrashCan Sinatras used to do a great cover of "White Horses" live...I once played on the same bill as them and just knew a couple of their jangly singles...but at that period live they were another kettle of fish completely, Frank Reader utterly out of his head, everything drowning in feedback. Padraig, A band I am very fond of. If you have not already done so, check out The Front Lawn ( Don McGlashan, Harry Sinclair and Jennifer Ward-Lealand. ) They released two album ( Songs From The Front Lawn in 1989 and More Songs From The Front Lawn in 1993.) This thread has me poking through entertaining Kiwi rock videos. I've ordered an anthology of the Fourmyula. Nowadays I have a limited appetite for 60s music but their pop/wimp psychedelia sounds like it's worth having even if I don't feel like listening very often. Still trying to decide what I'll do about the Mutton Birds. An anthology, or just plunge in and get everything? A zillion years ago a friend tried to turn me onto them but whatever he played did not grab me. Since "Anchor Me" sounds familiar that might have been what he played. It seems like one of those obviously radio-aimed a-sides that can often misrepresent a group much like "Don't Fight It" horribly misrepresents the Panics. "Dominion Road" is pleasant but I'd fall asleep during an entire album that sounded like it (too obviously 60s-influenced anodyne alterna-rock). Padraig's posted sample ("White Valiant") is great. So, Hugh, Padraig, where do I start? Anthology or album? Hugh, "This Old Address" really appeals to me but a lot of Thrashing Marlin seems a little too old time folk revival for my current musical taste. It IS hard to get a sense of what they are about. | ||

Randy, I am not aware of a decent Mutton Birds Anthology so, if you decide to investigate the band further, I would recommend the individual albums. They only recorded / released four studio albums ( The Mutton Birds; Salty; Envy Of Angels; Rain, Steam And Speed.) Nature ( their third album release ) was simply a collection of songs from their first two album. As regards Envy Of Angels, I believe the Australian release contains two tracks not on the U.K. release ( Along The Boundary and a cover of Don't Fear The Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult ) while the New Zealand release has one additional track ( Along The Boundary.) As well as being members of Thrashing Marlin, David Donaldson, Steve Roche and Janet Roddick compose, perform, record and produce music collectively under the name Plan 9. They have completed scores for approximately 20 feature films as well as contributing music to Lord Of The Rings and The Hobbit. They are also members of The Labcoats and Six Volts. Hugh, thanks, I'll check them out. Randy, listen to the words of Dominion Road. I listened to it while on Dominion Road on my way to Auckland airport a few years back. It made it even more powerful and moving than it already was. It's an incredible song. They have a best of called Flock, which I don't have, but it's a pretty good selection. Nature is where I started with them. |
