Fast Cars - More? An EP by an Australian band. I'd never heard of them before, but the description sticker put on it by Red Eye appealed to me. They did not, however, mention that the singer sounds like Geddy Lee. I quite Geddy Lee's voice, but fronting Rush. I'm not certain I'm sold on that voice fronting a psychedelic/surf/pop band. Hmmm. | ||

I retired at the end of March and my wife and I relocated to Turkey in May. Today's purchases: The Nature Strip - Presents! (Sydney band, I bought it from their Bandcamp page because I couldn't find the CD in either of the two record shops I checked. He's been around for a while and has done a number of recordings and collaborations that stretch boundaries. His albums on Matador are "straighter" for lack of a better term, and he generally performs in a two-guitar, bass and drums lineup. He is a "player" and I like the long raga-esque pieces that he's done; one side of a shared album titled "End of the City" and his side-long contribution to the Three Lobed Records box, "Not The Spaces You Know, But Between Them." The new album, "Eyes on the Lines" is not as immediately interesting as "Way Out Weather" but it reveals a lot of intricacy with each listen. He's definitely worth exploring. He's part of that whole muso-Americana network along with Hiss Golden Messenger and William Tyler. He did a collaboration album with HGM called Golden Gunn, which is excellent (heady, dreamy stuff). | ||

Padraig, They hailed from Melbourne and put out four albums ( Cool Fool; No Scandal - No Future - In Heaven; Bad Vibrations; Moods On The Move ) between 2000 and 2011. Nania was the main songwriter / lead vocalist. I believe the last two were vinyl / digital download only releases. Well worth a listen. The sound through my hi-fi is indistinguishable from cd to my ears. I don't use a streaming company ( Spotify etc.) I purchase and download FLAC files to a Network Attached Storage ( QNAP TS-231 ) and play the music via a Moon MiND 180 Network Player, Rega Apollo-R Amplifier / Rega DAC-R and Mission 751 Loudspeakers. Happy New Year everybody! London was very pleasant. Judging by what is in the news about weather on the Continent I appear to have been very lucky indeed. I really should post on this thread more often so it is not as daunting a task. First, here are the unshelved purchases since whenever I last shelved them. I don't buy as much as Padraig so this might conceivably date all the way from mid February of last year. This list does NOT include what I picked up at Rough Trade in London. Anna Domino -- s/t Big disappointment. Alan Rankine and Factory Records' association notwithstanding, "Rhythm" (sic) is fine but the rest is pretty boring. Antoine -- Selection 2 CD. This didn't add much of value to what I already have by this mid-60s French punk Dylan wannabe. Alain Bashung -- Ballades & Mots d'Amour. Purchased for his 1992 version of "Les mots bleus." Butcher Boy -- React or Die. Bad album title, great album. A worthy successor to "Profit in your Poetry." Significantly better than their third album "Helping Hands." Commotion Upstairs -- Tomorrow Never Comes. A Firestation collection. Deserves a re-listen. It didn't grab first time around. Dani -- best of . . . God, I hope not. I bought this because of one 60s video on youtube. Not worth it. La Grande Sophie -- Nos Histoires. Not a classic but a low key improvement on her previous disappointing album, "La Place du Fantome." Kraftwerk -- Radio-Activity. I figured I should have it but I can't promise I'll play it very often. Marta Kubisova -- Ne! Marta Kubisova -- Vyznani Marta Kubisova -- Zlata Sedesata. I am all about Marta Kubisova these days. She was Czechoslovakia's great 60s female singer who excelled at so much of what she tackled. If you doubt me go on youtube and hunt up her Czech version of soul ballad, "Prove It" (called "Proudy"). That doesn't mean she didn't do some dire things, particularly covers. She was, after all, a female pop singer in the 1960s. You'll never need to hear her version of "Hey Jude" or "Walkin' Back to Happiness" but the overwhelming majority of her recordings of Czech-sourced songs are brilliant. The last of these three purchases is a 6 CD set. It's the one to have. Man Upstairs -- Home from the Picnic. Another Firestation release that didn't grab me but deserves another audit. Gerard Manset -- 1968 Gerard Manset -- La Mort d'Orion Gerard Manset -- Il voyage en solitaire "1968" is a fabulous early progrock creation. Being early, it's still entirely song based and they're not too long. It's dark and apocalyptic. If youtube has "Golgotha" posted, give it a listen. "La Mort d'Orion" is a slight bit later and he is dipping deeper into prog. It's not as good but still worth hearing. "Il voyage en solitaire" is a reissue that somewhat alters a 1975 album. It's actually not too proggy but on first listen I found it kind of dull. I much prefer Bashung's 2008 version of the title song. The Moles -- Tonight's Music Neu! -- 75. I can promise I will listen to this much more often than I will listen to the Kraftwerk album above. Preoccupations -- s/t The Viet Cong renamed themselves rather limply but have a good solid neo-post-punk album on offer. Prophet Hens -- The Wonderful Shapes of Back Door Keys. Good band, but this one's in need of more listening. Dick Rivers -- L'interrogation. When the French set their minds to making rubbish they are second to none. I just had to . . . . St. Christopher -- Forevermore Starts Here. Good quality 80s twee rock. Tages -- Studio. From Sweden, for those of you who love Beatlesque music. I couldn't wait for it to end. Wolfhounds -- Middle-Aged Freaks. They came back! Cull thoughtfully and you'll have something worthwhile. The final track "The Ten Commandments of Public Life" is a sprawling winner. | ||

Moving on to my Rough Trade East purchases. I have heard none of these so I'll have to comment on them over time as I play them. One of my favorite features of Rough Trade is their truncated editorial comments on the release. I suppose they have a website where I can read the entire description but I am in the store and I am NOT going to pull out the phone. I have to guess from the first lines whether it's likely to be something I'm interested in. I usually manage about a 75% success rate with Rough Trade but this is the biggest haul so far. I didn't get to Fopp, Padraig. I'd already maxed out my spare bag space with this haul. Allo Darlin -- We Come from the Same Place. I've heard a lot about them, let's see what I think. Pete Astor -- Spilt Milk. Luke Haines trashed Astor's status as a songwriter. I look at Pete Astor as the C86 Rick Nelson. That's not an insult. Martin Bramah -- The Battle of Twisted Heel. I decided put back the Blue Orchids' reunion album in favor this. Bubblegum Lemonade -- The Great Leap Back. Terrible band name but the description of Scottish old school indie pop sounds pretty attractive. Fad Gadget -- Fireside Favourites Fad Gadget -- Incontinent. A Fad Gadget antho I've had for 30 years has been a durable favorite so I had to try a couple of the albums. La Femme -- Mystere. Ugly cover and I don't associate Rough Trade with French music but the description sounds tempting. 14 Iced Bears -- Hold On Inside. More C86 type stuff. I'm a huge sucker for this period. Jean-Paul Sartre Experience -- I Like Rain. Overdue. Latimer House -- All the Rage. R/T describes this as "literate, melodic pop." From Prague! Lush -- Ciao! We'll see. I've bypassed them forever. Momus -- Pubic Intellectual. Some of you will remember Spencer Roberts on this board in earlier years. He would periodically send me Momus tracks to try to sell me on him. He always kind of creeped me out but I figure one good antho is sensible. The Ocean Party -- Restless. I decided to buy this instead of the Goon Sax on the theory that I'll get the Goon Sax but I'll forget to go looking for this. Shopping -- Why Choose. Local East London band. Just because. Swell Maps -- A Trip to Marineville. I've never heard them. It's time. Television Personalities -- Very best of. I never knew where to start with this band, so I'm starting here. UK Decay -- New Hope for the. Groovy CD cover. | ||

Randy, I didn't get to Rough Trade this time, but bought enough CDs, records, books, DVDs and Blu-rays elsewhere that my suitcase split when I was packing to leave and I had to buy two new suitcases in Heathrow to fit everything in. Luckily the guy in the luggage shop took the split one (which had served me well for 14 years and traversed the globe many, many times) to dispose of. | ||

On vinyl, yesterday, I got: Justin Townes Earle - Yuma (six song 10") Guards - In Guards We Trust Big Star - #1 Record Big Star - Radio City I remember seeing the Big Star albums, and Pet Sounds, going for five pounds each in a record shop in Byres Road in Glasgow in 1996. The band have been together for around seven years during which time they have released six albums. The six members of the band share songwriting / singing duties and most of them play in other Australian bands including Cool Sounds who you are familiar with.
