Another Material and William S. Burroughs track, the brilliant Words Of Advice. It's hard to imagine anything like this being recorded now. What author could bring that level of gravitas and humour to a track now?

Luna - The Days Of Our Nights. It's years since I last played it, and it has improved with that absence. (I loved it from its release in October 1999 anyway). So many of Luna's best songs are on it, and it all holds together as an album too.

The Moles -- Tonight's Music

When I saw that there are 24 tracks and no credits I knew there was danger. I made it to track five and then pulled it out. So far no songs. I'll try again later, but in my before-work time I want to hear something that doesn't bore me.

I have it, Randy, but haven't played it yet. The fact it has so many songs was putting me off. Damn, your experience was what I was fearing.

Listening to Teenage Fanclub's Here. Norman Blake told me in January 2013 that they were going to record it in May that year in the south of France. And that's where they did record a lot of it. The fact it has taken so long to come out is an indication of how the bottom has fallen out of the music industry. Here is up there with their best. If you've ever liked Teenage Fanclub, you need this record.

The Moles – Tonight's Music. Randy, give it another go. I'm only on track four (the admittedly fairly unlistenable Highbury And Islington - it seems to be loosely about both the football club Arsenal, and Romeo and Juliet) but it's definitely an album you have to be in the mood for. And right now I am. Tonally, The Moles were always the ugly stepsister to the melodically beautiful music Davies made with Cardinal and on his own.

The song Chills sounds very like its namesake. I don't know if its a pastiche or a tribute. Maybe a bit of both. The song Damien Lovelock is in the same grey area.

Mutton Birds -- Envy of Angels

I don't think I'm going to bond with this band. The music is too Beatlesque. It just doesn't sound fresh to me. Maybe I'll find one or two tracks to stick on the iPod but if so that's not a very high ranking.

Another recent purchase that is much more to my taste is:

Girls Names -- Arms Around a Vision. This dates from last year. It is their third album. I've enjoyed their first two and this one sounds like I'll be enjoying it as well.

I've also been really enjoying the randomly pitched up tracks from

Bushwalking -- No Enter.

This dates from 2013 and I've had it since it was new. Bushwalking is a bit of a supergroup so I don't know if there will ever be anything new from them. I do find an older vinyl release of theirs but at the moment I'm not inclined to buy a vinyl-only release. That may change of course.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cdPapsJR Cxc

Another pleasant recent purchase is:

Dom la Nena -- Ela

This predates her current album "Soyo." In a way, she sounds like Mademoiselle K might if they suddenly decided to go quiet and gentle.

Interesting. I never thought of The Mutton Birds as being Beatlesesque... that's a pretty specific range of musical ingredients; melody, guitar sound, vocals & harmonies. The MB's songs are well-constructed in a classic sense, but I don't hear it.

My favorite song on "Envy of Angels" is "Like This Train" but of the albums I have, "Rain, Steam & Speed" is my favorite. Songs such as "Pulled Along By Love" and "Small Mercies" are always welcome on a compilation.

These guys were a nice discovery for me at the time, but I never became a rabid fan or anything.

The last show I saw in NYC before we left on April 30th was a bill featuring an East Coast edition of The Moles.

Some friends of mine (Glenn Morrow's Cry For Help) were on the bill as well as Hamish Kilgour. I was quite shocked that The Moles were playing a show in 2016... one that I just happened-upon. The young draftees in the band did the music justice.

Few people knew who they (he) were, but I heard a number of people comment, "I hear a lot of WIRE in their sound."

I'm very curious to hear a new album. I talked to a guy at the bar who knew Richard Davies. He apparently relocated to the US and has enjoyed a career as a lawyer. Music is an avocation.

Randy,

I really like "Ela", but haven't got "Soyo3 yet. Would you recommend it ?

I missed seeing Dom la Nena play last year in Bordeaux; she did a gig on a boat that left the center of the city at 6am and sailed up the estuary!

I first was aware of her in the version of Nick Drake's "One of These Things First" that Camille did with Piers Faccini...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohr6HoU- yfM

I love the cello as an instrument and one of the most memorable concerts I've attended was the Bach cello suites many years ago at the Edinburgh Festival in the Usher Hall. A solo performance that was utterly mesmerising.

Andrew if you like "Ela" yes get "Soyo." It's it little more pop but only a little. I remember seeing a woman perform with a cello by herself in a club in Hollywood maybe about 10 years ago. I thought it was great until I got tired of her total reliance upon a digital looper.

Guy, we're all going to hear different things in music which of course you already know. It would never occur to me to compare the Moles to Wire like the person you talked to did. And I'm probably not prepared to call the Moles the ugly relative to Davies' solo records as Padraig has said upthread. I'm pretty sure the first Moles I ever heard was "What's the New Mary Jane?" When they were on, they were really ON, with things like "Mary Jane" and "Lonely Hearts Get What They Deserve" and "This Is a Happy Garden." The first five numbers I heard on the new album made me think of the tracks I deleted from the old anthology CD's. I will proceed through again. Who knows, I might have been in a grouchy mood. I've actually come to the conclusion that Cardinal are too cloying for me so they've fallen off my personal list.

The Beatlesque quality I find on "Envy of Angels" is particularly well illustrated by the vaguely Indian modal-sound of the first track. Think of songs like "Rain" or "And Your Bird Can Sing," that sort of thing. I just found them kind of lacking in quirk in a way that's not working with me nowadays. On this particular album anyway. Blame it on the Go-Betweens.

Meanwhile,

Miossec -- Boire

I ordered this at least a month ago. It showed up today, from Canada, apparently a more challenging journey than coming from Toulon or Berlin or Oz or somewhere like that. I'd assumed it got lost or swiped. Much more acoustic and much lower budget than the overly rockish "Baiser." Hence better.

The Mutton Birds are very Beatlesey, but they do it wonderfully well. I've also thought on occasion that they could have been called the Mutton Byrds. It never occurred to that the Moles sound like Wire. Maybe.

I certainly don't have a negative response to a group being Beatles-esque... I'd describe a number of my very favorite artists with the term. I adore Badfinger. Many of Robyn Hitchock's best songs are highly Lennon-esque and The Soft Boys recorded "Cold Turkey." Velvet Crush had a lot of overt 60's references in their sound, admittedly with a lean in The Byrds and Beach Boys direction. I've always loved the Lilac Time and they've strongly-evoked several periods of The Beatles career; "Magical Mystery Tour" with "...And Love For All" and "The White Album" with "Astronauts" (especially).

To me, the Mutton Birds are aligned with all the usual suspects: The Go-Betweens (natch), The Triffids, Lloyd Cole, The Apartments, The Smiths, Shack, R.E.M. - all of whom [no doubt] studied The Beatles, but didn't specifically ape them to my ears.

But as I said, I'm a total sucker for a group that apes the Fab Four (if they get it right). If I start to hear more 'Beatles' in the Mutton Birds songs, I'll probably like them more.

That Moles > Wire comparison wasn't mine, it was a comment from Glenn Morrow who was playing that night (and is the owner of Bar/None Records, a very knowledgeable music fan). Then another friend made the same comparison, but neither guy was familiar with The Moles.

I can see the comparison. The abstract quality of the compositions, songs that are often short and to the point with nothing repeated. And Wire have done a LOT of different things during their long and varied career.

I ordered the new album... I should get it in a couple of weeks.

A lot of John Coltrane. There is a point in his recordings where I lose him and I used to wonder if you had to be a musician of a certain ability to understand what he was trying to do in the latter part of his life. But when you read that Elvin Jones and McCoy Tyner both left the famous quartet as they could only hear “noise” you think “ah maybe not” !

I love the story of him telling Miles Davis that he just didn’t know how to stop playing. Miles’ answer was apparently “Take the motherf***er out of your mouth”. I remember seeing a documentary about the quartet and Elvin Jones saying that they had absolutely no idea what they were going to play as they walked onto the stage each night. And there were performances where Coltrane would walk off still playing and continue playing into the dressing room or toilet.

The Half Note recordings from ’65 feature a 30 minute solo from Coltrane ("One Down, One Up") and it is reckoned that is only maybe a half of the piece. Some of it is just Coltrane and Jones and it sounds like Jimmy Garrison (bass) and Tyner (piano) have basically give up playing.

The legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder (who died recently and who recorded Coltrane a lot) told the story of recording “Ascension” (a 40 minute piece). At the end of the first take Elvin Jones was completely exhausted and said to Coltrane that he couldn’t do that again. The musicians had a break outside, went back in and did a second take. At the end Jones threw his snare at the wall !

I’m sure that I’ve posted this before, but the performance of “Alabama” on Jazz Casual is simply sublime. You can understand why certain people believe that the man was a saint or angel. There seems to be a theory that Coltrane’s playing is based on the eulogy that Martin Luther King gave for 3 of the 4 girls that were murdered by the KKK in the church bombing in Birmingham in 1963.

A bunch of years ago I got a gorgeous little box set called "The Classic Quartet -- Complete Impulse! Studio Recordings." I lapped it up. Then I picked up "The Major Works of John Coltrane" and ground to a halt on "Ascension."

Today, Wolfhounds -- Middle-Aged Freaks

About 2/3 of this is surprisingly good Wolfhounds.

The Necessaries - Event Horizon. I only just heard of this album's existence in this excellent article a few weeks ago. https://www.theguardian.com/music/2016/o ct/27/the-lost-albums-loved-by-the-stars -from-ecstatic-gospel-to-italian-prog

Thanks for the link to the Guardian article. There are a number of things that interest me, probably the gospel Clark singers most of all.

The original Clark Sisters! I've added that album (the first of theirs mentioned) to my iTunes wish list. Some of the albums mentioned aren't even on iTunes, never mind CD.

Kate Bush - Before The Dawn. It just arrived in the post. I can't remember the last time I was this excited to hear a new record. It's astonishing, all I could have hoped for and more. I'm in tears listening to it.

My dog died this week. Halfway between Leonard Cohen and Fidel Castro. When I got the news I was at work listening to 'De La Soul Is Dead'.

So sorry, Jerry. In my experience, there a few things tougher in this mortal coil than losing a dog. Hopefully, he's right now curled up on Cohen's lap listening to him recite poetry and biting Castro in the ass whenever he walks in the room.

The Autumn Defense - Eastside Manor Session. Wilco are very lucky to have Pat Sansone in the band.

I hope so, Rob. With the rise of fascism I tend to prefer animals to people these days.

The Cramps - Look Ma No Head
Felt - Ignite The Seven Cannons
Brian Eno - Here Come The Warm Jets

Right now I'm digging through the enormous back catalogue of Marta Kubisova (that spelling is missing some Slavic pronunciation marks). She recorded and performed until early 1970 and then was banned by the Communist government because of her indelible association with the Prague Spring movement. She recorded a LOT of stuff and plenty of it is IMO kinda dull but the good stuff is very worth having.

Check out this eye-popping mid-60s Czechoslovak vid:

Or how about this? Hapsburg pop music! Check out its little musical nod to the Beatles' "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" at the end.

And if you wonder why the Czech government shut her down check out this 1969 video:
