The Beatles - The Inner Light. So long since I last heard this I had to check what song it was. |

A Night Like This - The Cure. Because of a million reasons I'm not going to go into now. But, just, because. Etc. "Your trust The most gorgeously stupid thing I ever cut in the world" |

The Blades - The Great Wall Of America. I bought single this in Tower yesterday on a quick trip to Dublin. Horn-driven power pop packing a political punch. |

Bob Dylan - Things Have Changed. Listening to a little bit of Bobby's paranoia three days from the US election. Robert is also a fan of the song. |

The Mekons- Hard To Be Human Again. There is such a profound sense of dread this morning. A song written about Thatcherism still has meaning in the different time. |

Fred (great name by the way, the F in my user name is Frederick), I don't know the Mekons' music, but in my former life as a sub-ed on a science fiction magazine I used to work with Dave Langford, SF writer/journalist of huge acclaim and brother of the Mekons' Jon Langford. |

Leonard Cohen - Democracy The first one that leapt rather automatically to mind. Sigh. |

Thanks, Simon. Leonard Cohen - Everybody Knows. Another dark song for this terrible week. I can't find my copy of the Leonard Cohen cover CD with versions by Robert Forster, David McComb, Lloyd Cole, and others. I really need to organize my CD collection sometime. |

High Tide 15:47 - When I'm With You. I heard this late at night on Radio X in London last week while driving back from a gig. I thought it was great and emailed the band and song name to myself (I wasn't driving, I hasten to add). And now I've bought it from iTunes. Sometimes technology is just wonderful. As is this song. Hugh, I reckon they'd be up your street. Randy too, maybe. |

Leonard Cohen - Dance Me to the End of Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ye6JssTd nvw I remember seeing this when it was first shown and thinking how it was possible to be both old and cool as fuck. I don't want to speak ill of the dead, but surely that smile on Perla Batalla's face at 3:45 has something to do with what Leonard's left hand is up to ? |

Alejandro Escovedo – Redemption Blues. I wish he would play some gigs in Australia. I saw him in Austin, Texas in March 2001 at SXSW and he was superb. |

AMC Trio & Philip Catherine - Chakanka (Or She Who Waits) Catherine is basically a jazz guitarist, but he plays a lot of stuff which isn’t very jazzy at all, which is the kind of jazz I like. This is like that – a clean, straightforward tune with melodic piano and a gorgeous guitar solo. |

James McMurtry - Sixty Acres. It's been a very long time since I last played this song. Still brilliant, and hilarious. |

Padraig, James McMurtry is a superb singer / songwriter. He is performing at the Oran Mor, Glasgow, in February, 2017, as part of the Celtic Connections and I may well pop along to see him. |

Yes, he's got his father Larry's way with words, and a gift for melody too. |

Blur – Best Days. An unheralded and mostly forgotten (by me, anyway) gem of a song on The Great Escape. (And I'm only hearing it because I had a desire to hear Country House and it's the next song.) |

The Moles - Bury Me Happy. Just heard it on the Radio National interview with Richard Davies and it sounded better than I'd ever thought it sounded before. |
