Eric Clapton - Little wing

Live in San Diego surrounded by a blue chip bunch of musicians and sounding like he's having a whale of a time; a sublime version of this song.

Damien Jurado - Radioactivity. Jurado sounds remarkably like John Cale on this.

Blur - The horrors

Breezy little piano instrumental on the 2nd CD of the Great Escape special edition, after being nudged back there by Pádraig's recent post. So it took me 20 years to come round to them, at least it was worth waiting for.

Nada - Senza Un Perché

Paolo Sorrentino sends Nada’s 2004 song (produced by John Parish) straight to the top of I-tunes with this rather splendid scene. I thought Youth was bloody awful, so I’ve given the Yong Pope a miss; but a lot of folk tell me it’s wonderful.

Enemies - itsallwaves. Irish band, track one from their new and last album. I'd never heard of them till I saw the review in the Irish Times last Friday.

Thanks, Andrew. Piano Magic have been around - mostly under the radar - for 20 years. The Peter Walsh song is from their supposedly final album, which is being released in early 2017.

They are based in London. The only time they almost broke through to public consciousness was around 2000 when they signed to 4AD for a couple of albums.

I'm in a very heavy Marta Kubisova thing now, having taken delivery of a very good 6 CD anthology of hers.

For this one light your torches and hang on. From 1965.

Not much to lose on all those CDs then??

Stuart, there's an English language single-disc set called "Ne!" which I think horribly disserves her. It focuses on one tiny--and often not-that-good--chunk of her work.

Then there's a 3CD set which includes a bunch of so far not interesting recordings she's done since the breakup of the Warsaw Pact. The good set--and of course you'll have to cull--is the 6CD "Zlata Sedesata" set. It's really pretty damn good. I got it from a seller in Germany for a quite reasonable price.

Alternatively I could just send you the tracks I've earmarked for sending on two CDs to the friend who turned me onto Mina some 25 years ago.

Soul Saints Orchestra - Santa's Got A Bag Of Soul. They sound like a Detroit band from the 60s, but they are actually a German band from the 90s. I just read about it today and bought it from iTunes without even hearing it. Worth every cent.

Status Quo - Down Down

RIP Rick Parfitt. Boogie on.

I had the denim waistcoat and I'm there somewhere on "Quo Live" recorded at the Glasgow Apollo. We were in the "Gods" for the gig and I remember being terrified at how much the balcony moved when the band hit the stage.

Simple Minds - Glittering Prize, acoustic version. I really did not think this would work so well acoustically, but it does.

Mental as Anything - Live it Up (featuring the grea Reg Mombassa)

And though not a huge fan of the music of either Rick Parfitt or Wham!, this year does seem to be finishing the year the way it started. (At least actress Liz Smith and writer Richard Adams reached decent ages.)

Alvaro Soler – El mismo sol

My wife developed a rather sickly crush on this charming and intelligent Catalan lad when he was a judge on this year’s Italian X-factor, while I couldn’t help admiring his intense and hard-working devotion to his musical charges and deep love of music in general… picking up a guitar and immersing himself in an old blues song, you could see there was a bit more to him than the teen-fodder he’s being marketed as. This, anyway, is a hellishly catchy little number that will no doubt get a bit of a bashing this evening around midnight.
