Fed up with my cumbersome mix of computer & speakers for internet radio, I've invested for Christmas in a dinky little black box that has the same function:so far, on my Favourites list I only have 2 stations, France's wonderful Fip & BBC's terribly civilised Radio 3... but the capacity for listing goes up to around 250 or something absurd, so I really need a few more suggestions. So, your favourite local or foreign station, something with the right mix of the music that we here at GBs tend to love, or on the other hand something with the same breezy eclecticism as Fip?? Let me know! | ||

Stuart, I'd suggest CHIRP Radio (if you can get it), a volunteer-run, nonprofit station based here in Chicago. They're VERY eclectic. They broadcast from 6 a.m. 'til midnight, Central Time, so be aware of that. I also listen to KEXP, based out of Seattle, which isn't as freeform as CHIRP but plays a pretty diverse mix, which is what I prefer. There used to be a France-based station that played Afropop, which I can no longer find. Other than that, I mainly listen to NPR. Most commercial, music-oriented radio stations are pretty pitiful, at least here in the States. | ||

I very rarely listen to anything other than ABC NewsRadio, but it also carries news programs from BBC World Service, NPR, Deutsche Welle and Radio Netherlands, so I can recommend them too. | ||

My radio listening is designed mainly to get me AWAY from world news!! I get enough of that elsewhere, and it rarely enhances my day! Although maybe a bit of local Scottish stuff would go down well, and help me to keep my accent going at the same time. Friends tell me a slight Italian intonation is creeping in, which is horrifying... | ||

Italian Scottish accent. I would love to hear you lecture on something Stuart and sit there not understanding a single word. I haven't listened to radio in many decades because U.S. radio has been hideous for that long. Even our generally excellent local KCRW just pitches up the latest Starbucks music. Stuart's box sounds interesting as do his French station and probably Rob's CHIRP station. These are internet stations, no? (That's how disconnected I am from radio; I don't even know how it's delivered any longer.) | ||

They're just ordinary radio stations, I think, which can be accessed over the internet. I was using my old, very slow laptop as a receiver, but by the time I'd booted it up, found the channel and then got the wi-fi connection going, I'd lost interest in listening... the box thing (technology is not my strongpoint) looks and works like a normal radio, switch it on, there you are. French Radio Fip does have its jazzier side, especially on Sunday evenings, but otherwise it jumps all over the place, from crooners to classical to soul to indie to French pop, in a most delightful way. I rarely tune in without hearing something new to take a note of... that's where I first heard Bastien Lallemant, for instance. My one and only lecture was entitled, "What is a Scot?"... used to knock 'em dead in summer school... | ||

I'm pretty certain CHIRP is Internet-only. Given the economies of scale, I'm guessing there are more than a few Web-based stations like CHIRP, I just haven't taken the time to search them out. | ||

BBC 6 Music isn't particularly obscure but varies from extremely good (Marc Riley and Gideon Coe) through to unlistenable (Shaun Keaveny, etc.) I listen to Dandelion Radio a bit at this time of year as they do a pretty good job of continuing John Peel's Festive 50. |
