It has just become 2017 in Sydney. The song to begin the new year for me is Big Star - September Gurls.

What a great song, Jerry! Good call.

For me, Thin Lizzy's magisterial Johnny The Fox Meets Jimmy The Weed. So many hip hop bands have sampled the drum break that Brian Downey should be a multi-millionaire from the royalties. I'm pretty sure he's not though.

The Chills - Pink Frost

"She won't move and I'm holding her head
She's lost...Bye Bye Bye"

Perfect accompaniment to a cold winter's day and a 20-minute walk home from my suburban railway station. And what a great album Kaleidoscope World is (somewhere along the line I have it on LP - remember those? - and CD).

All the best for 2017, fellow GBs' fans! (sorry if it's a bit late!)

The Walker Brothers - Nite Flights. I'm pretty sure I heard the Fatima Mansions version before I heard the original, but both are magnificent.

Weyes Blood – Moonlight Shadow. She played this Mike Oldfield cover as her encore tonight. I suspect I was one of the few in the audience who knew what song it was.

The Bats - No Trace. The most upbeat, power poppy song on their out on Friday (in New Zealand and Australia anyway) new album.

It's already sounding better on second listen. I figured it might be a grower.

Phoebe Bridgers - Smoke Signals

Simply gorgeous. I'm always a sucker for a good twangy reverb guitar hook. Very Twins Peak.Like the strings arrangement too.

Ah, I was just wondering when the Bats might give us another album. I agree with Rob. I loved the last one.

Morrissey - A Song From Under The Floorboards

He does a good job here, does Moz, making you think that, health permitting, and should any record company get hold of a suitable substitute for a barge pole, a decent covers album might be a better step for him at the moment than another weary bash-out of original work.
