I think the last time that happened with me was with The Piano, which I saw in Italian, understanding nothing of the dialogue, but completely overwhelmed by the images and music. Then I took a girl along a few days later, hoping the film might inspire her to see the hidden Harvey Keitel within me. No luck, of course, but I loved the film second time round anyway. | ||

Last film I can remember seeing twice on its release is Diva (1981) - I'm a sucker for style over substance! Possibly saw Repo Man twice in '84, too, and I suspect the same applies. This was the advantage of living in a city with an independent cinema when I was at university in Norwich. Big up to Cinema City. | ||

Grand Corps Malade & Anna Kova - Espoir adapté Went en-famille to see Grand Corps Malade's film last night ("Patients"), which is his own story in a centre for paralysed patients. Not perhaps the greatest cinema, but a heartfelt uplifting tale. He was almost 20, a top basketball player and about to start his studies to become a sports teacher, when he dived into a swimming pool which was not fully filled. A stupid accident and one which left him largely paralysed. Obviously someone with an enormous strength and will, he fought back and with the help of the staff of the centre he can walk today. I love "The Piano". Pure visual poetry. Not sure it makes a lot of sense. Jane Campion did a Q&A session in Edinburgh when the film was released and someone asked how Keitel was able to read the note that is left on the gatepost for him, as his character is supposed to be illiterate. There was a few seconds gap and she said "Um. I hadn"t thought of that". Lovely Nyman soundtrack too. For me the greatest style over substance was "Betty Blue" ("37° 2 le matin"). I worked in Edinburgh's arthouse cinema at the time and couldn't understand how anyone could possibly get emotionally worked up about it. | ||

There was something so special about them at that time; maybe tied to their history...as a fan you felt almost "protective" of them. I was living in a student hall of residence and we had videoed "Riverside" and watched their performance endlessly... My favourite 12 inch single of all time ! | ||

Stuart, Michael Kiwanuka's debut album, Home Again, is well worth getting. Try to get the deluxe edition if you can. The extra five tracks on the second disc are great too. I regularly see the deluxe version in bargain bins in Sydney, but it might be more expensive in Europe. | ||

Anybody grooving to Magnetic Fields "50 Song Memoir"? Lots to like, though of course not all 50. Standouts for me are "No," "A cat called Dionysus," "I Think I'll Make Another World" and "Foxx and I." These albums won't change my life like "69 Love Songs" did (really I was never the same after hearing "100,000 Fireflies" for the first time), but that is a personal issue that I'll have to contend with. It is certainly better than most things I will hear all year, and that is a major victory. | ||

Michael Kiwanuka - Cold Little Heart (album version) The 10 minute version has about everything I like in it, in a kitchen sinky sort of way, starting slow and dreamy with the backing vocals, then the band kicks in, then it gets all Floydian for a patch, then finally the actual song begins, a fully-rounded, confident boom of a tune. Great way to start the day. | ||

Half Man Half Biscuit - "Reasons to Be Miserable (Part 10)" from the album Back in the DHSS Again. As of yesterday I'm on two weeks 'consultation' and unless things change I'll be made redundant on 10 April and on the dole! It'll be my third redundancy, but at least my first two were voluntary. Austin, another thumbs up for "50 Song Memoir." It's not as epochal as "69 Love Songs" - how could it be - and it's held back a bit by it being essentially a Merritt solo project. I miss the mix of voices in past MF's works. Still, while there are few duds, a lot of it is prime stuff, which is quite an accomplishment across 5 CDs. | ||

Chances are that my wife and I will be alright in spite of the present upset, but a lot of pro-brexiteers/pro-Trump supporters are likely to suffer as a result of their own votes. Yes, I could be wrong, but frankly it's hard to see how leaving Europe/voting for Trump can be anything but a disaster for our respective populations.
