The 100 Years' War by Andrew Kirkman and The Binchois Consort. I would have found this chorale/classical/medieval music excruciating when I was in my teens/20s/30s, but it is absolutely stunning. The breadth of its ambition is exhilarating. That it pulls it off is just phenomenal. | ||

Rolling Blackouts C.F.: "Talk Tight." I dunno if anyone mentioned this here before since it came out in Australia back in '16. Sub Pop just released it in the States in August and, boy, is it a winner. I can't imagine fans of a certain NZ sound - Chills, Bats, etc. - not flipping over this one. I'd expect Go-Betweens admirers might find a lot to like, too. They've got a more recently released EP that's not quite up to snuff, IMO, but I'll wait 'til they get their shit together for a proper full-length. I think they've got a great one in 'em. | ||

Myaskovsky - Cello concerto I heard this piece just the other day for the first time, and have been playing it ever since. Myaskovsky was apparently "a fragile, secretive, introverted man”, his life marked by domestic tragedy and brutal experience in the First World War; he was also, however, though described as “quiet but never compliant" towards the government, cunning enough to win the Stalin Prize five times before being “criticised” together with other Russian composers after the Second World War, when he wrote this beautiful, swooning, regret-drenched concerto. Ocean Party -- Beauty Point I have been raving about Ocean Party for a while now but in some ways they are a hard sell because of their sheer perversity, coupled with the un-pop subtlety of their charms which only insinuate themselves over time. This new album's predecessor "Restless" starts with what feels like the second song in a classic album sequence. It's striking how the album feels like you accidentally dropped the needle in the middle. "Beauty Point" gradually fades in, starting with what might be a song demo. The meatiest songs begin with number 4, "Memorial Flame Trees." It's a flawed but probably magnificent album. For those of you who have a particular weakness for the jagged/pretty/tart combination found in "Before Hollywood" and "Spring Hill Fair" I recommend you give Ocean Party some time. "Beauty Point" is a fine place to start. | ||

Brian Eno & John Cale - Wrong Way Up. It's an album from 1990 whose existence I only became aware of a few days ago and I've just played it now for the first time. It's wonderful. Given the incredible Songs For Drella was also released in 1990, that was one hell of a year for Cale. I'd love to see him live again. | ||

Rob, I tend to worry a bit when I start raving about some artist because so often I find that my tastes are out of sync with that of other folks. I do think "Beauty Point" has a lot to offer to the Go Betweens listener. Here's one song that strikes me as rather Go-Betweensish in sound: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yafgWKog VJw And, mind you, this isn't even one of the best songs on the album. So far my favorites of their albums are "Split," "Light Weight" and "Beauty Point." I believe Hugh told me his favorite is "Soft Focus." They definitely have something to offer. "American Epic." The 5-disc companion to the PBS series examining the recording boom in the 1920s as record companies - pressured by competition from radio - hit the road in search of new, unexplored music styles. Like Harry Smith's "Anthology of Folk Music," this is just track after track of weird, wonderful fun. And it sounds just phenomenal. They did some crazy fancy remastering with the original records and they're scary clear. It's a pleasure to hear the level of detail in the old performances – it really is like when they remove those centuries of grime from old paintings and you see the bright colors pop. I know five discs seems like a slog but this is the motherlode. The shit from whence came all the other shit. It's really good. | ||

I got a one disc version, Rob, and a double CD of current musicians covering the old songs. And I got the DVD, but haven't watched it yet. Did you notice the Go-Betweens connection? Bernard MacMahon, who produced the series, released the Go-Betweens remasters in the UK in the early noughties. I think he may also have released at least the first of the comeback albums (someone not too lazy to google it right now can fill in the blanks). | ||

This might be one of those, "well, duh" things, but I wonder, in light of the "American Epic" thing, if Lo-Max was named after Alan Lomax, the American ethnomusicologist who made field recording of all the old blues and bluegrass guys and the like. When the label was releasing the Go-Betweens and the Magnetic Fields it didn't seem obvious, but maybe this was MacMahon's plan all along. | ||

Andreas, If you like Ocean Party and Ciggie Witch then check out Pregnancy who hail from Melbourne. Dual lead vocalists ( Zac Denton of Ocean Party / Ciggie Witch and Ashley Bundang of Ciggie Witch.) Liam Halliwell of Ocean Party is also a member of the band. They released their debut album ( Urgency ) on vinyl / digital download in July, 2017. Robert McColm of The Triffids plays violin on several tracks. Be aware that there is a Metal / Grindcore band from Melbourne with the same name. | ||

Very eloquent, Burgers. One of the worst live performances I've ever seen (and at the age of 54 I've been to a fair number of gigs) was Primal Scream supporting Julian Cope at the Bierkeller, Bristol - on 29 October 1986 if Google's to be believed. Truly dreadful. | ||
