Gaetan Roussel – La simplicité/Eolienne The exhilarating opening track(s) from GR’s short but rather nifty 2013 album Orpailleur (“goldpanner”, apparently) which shows him playing breathlessly around with skittish electronics and jolly female backup vocals. The intonation in La simplicité has a definite Bashungian tinge to it, so perhaps something originally destined for Bleu petrole. | ||

Ginger got very lukewarm reviews, so I didn't pay much attention to it; this other one slipped right past me, until I browsed Amazon fr. recently. And it's not bad at all - sounds like he's having fun. The tracks mentioned above are my present "Wake the f*** up" music to help me drag myself to the desk. | ||

But a teeny-tiny claim to fame that I have is that I once tried on Frank Sidebottom's papier mache head (it reeked of beer and fags) when I was on a TV programme as a 'talking head' expert along with Frank/Chris Sievey. He didn't try on the head, but Frank, sans head, had earlier pretended to be his own publicist. That doesn't surprise me about Frank S/Chris Sievey pretending to be his own publicist; his whole shtick was very odd and not universally popular. Many, many years ago, I'm guessing the late 1980s or early 1990s, I saw him at Bath University in a gig with impressionist Phil Cornwell. A fair number of people left after only a few minutes of Frank's act. Haven't seen the film yet, but will probably find it very cheap on DVD soon. It had very strong reviews. | ||

Pádraig, that's a top, top version and has to be one of the best covers of all time. My choice today is Glenn Gould's 1981 version of the Goldberg Variations, possibly the most moving music ever created. Sheesh, I'm going a little OTT today. It's been a stressful and emotionially challenging few months, followed by a Christmas where I've been ill with a very heavy cold (and I'm no hypochondriac - honest!), and now my wife's ill with the same cold and the wine's taking effect! Have a great end of 2017 y'all and best wishes for 2018. I'll be buying tickets tomorrow for Lloyd Cole and the Stranglers, and hopefully a few other bands will come the way of the West Country in the new year... | ||
