Gaetan Roussel – La simplicité/Eolienne

The exhilarating opening track(s) from GR’s short but rather nifty 2013 album Orpailleur (“goldpanner”, apparently) which shows him playing breathlessly around with skittish electronics and jolly female backup vocals. The intonation in La simplicité has a definite Bashungian tinge to it, so perhaps something originally destined for Bleu petrole.

Taking notes, Stuart. My acquisition of Roussel's music has been a bit random. This and the new project are now on my radar.

Ginger got very lukewarm reviews, so I didn't pay much attention to it; this other one slipped right past me, until I browsed Amazon fr. recently. And it's not bad at all - sounds like he's having fun. The tracks mentioned above are my present "Wake the f*** up" music to help me drag myself to the desk.

Microdisney - Clock Runs Down The Stairs (Peel Session), in which Cathal Coughlan channels John Cale and gives a strong indication of where he would later head to with Fatima Mansions.

Zaz - La Légende Des Colibris

Gosh, what a bouncing little force of nature she is, and maybe my favourite female voice of the last decade. Here she cuts loose live in Stuttgart with a roaring jazz band and a song about a hummingbird.

Marta Kubisova - Modlitba Pro Martu

There are two versions from the 1960s. The first version is orchestrated and syrupy. The later one intended for Marta's one and only album in the 1960s is timeless. It was withdrawn to satisfy the post-Prague Spring Czechoslovak authorities.

Frank Sidebottom - Panic on the Streets of Timperley

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcAME_Hs 9mg

I'm pretty stressed at the moment with two elderly and ill parents so need some musical levity, and this is either a work of genius or absolute 'bobbins'! But a teeny-tiny claim to fame that I have is that I once tried on Frank Sidebottom's papier mache head (it reeked of beer and fags) when I was on a TV programme as a 'talking head' expert along with Frank/Chris Sievey. Happy days. Maybe I should have chosen Hit the North...

Simon, I've definitely never heard of this!

Best wishes for you with your parents. I've been through that with one so far. I had to learn to shout down my inner voice of defeat. Music was essential.

Best wishes with your folks, Simon.

My cousin interviewed Frank Sidebottom one time. Said it was a very odd experience. He didn't try on the head, but Frank, sans head, had earlier pretended to be his own publicist. Did you see the Irish film about him? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_(film)

Song of the day: Hater - Blushing. I'm guessing these female, Swedish indie poppers have heard a Go-Betweens record or two. https://haterfire.bandcamp.com/album/red -blinders

Louise Attaque - Un peu de patience

I have listened, hope to listen, to a lot of stuff, but in the end I will always come back to stuff like this...

That doesn't surprise me about Frank S/Chris Sievey pretending to be his own publicist; his whole shtick was very odd and not universally popular. Many, many years ago, I'm guessing the late 1980s or early 1990s, I saw him at Bath University in a gig with impressionist Phil Cornwell. A fair number of people left after only a few minutes of Frank's act. Haven't seen the film yet, but will probably find it very cheap on DVD soon. It had very strong reviews.

Portishead - SOS, an astonishing cover of the Abba song, inspired by the murder of British politician Jo Cox in June 2016.

Pádraig, that's a top, top version and has to be one of the best covers of all time.

My choice today is Glenn Gould's 1981 version of the Goldberg Variations, possibly the most moving music ever created.

Sheesh, I'm going a little OTT today. It's been a stressful and emotionially challenging few months, followed by a Christmas where I've been ill with a very heavy cold (and I'm no hypochondriac - honest!), and now my wife's ill with the same cold and the wine's taking effect!

Have a great end of 2017 y'all and best wishes for 2018. I'll be buying tickets tomorrow for Lloyd Cole and the Stranglers, and hopefully a few other bands will come the way of the West Country in the new year...

Loudon W3 - Wine with dinner

Getting Lost Weekend and Under the Volcano into the same line, that's a classy touch I think.
