St. Christopher -- Say Yes to Everything I never heard of St. Christopher prior to buying Cherry Red's 2014 anthology a couple years ago. Glenn Melia must have been a huge Joe Meek fan, because nobody but NOBODY has updated the feel of the often-ridiculous (but ridiculously catchy) pre-Beatles U.K. kids pop that Meek purveyed in, say, 1961 or 1962. The backings are often florid--here we have what sounds like kettle drums--and the singer mincing and at least borderline poofy. Plug this song into your car stereo on an empty roadway after dark and see how it travels with you. Superb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DodD8TJJ Gcc |

Just to give you an idea of the obvious musical connection, here is a 1963 Meek single. Meek forced his singers to smile at all times while they sang into the mike because he was convinced their voices sounded different. He also was notorious for making the bands play the music slowly so that he could vari-speed the recording up and "youthify" the voice of the singer and put more sparkle in the sound of the instrumentation. Geoff Goddard -- Sky Men https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWQGVwOd UPk We really need those Sky Men here in the States right now. Probably in the U.K. as well. |

Waterboys - Peace of Iona If you’re going to write a song about the island of Iona and record it in the Findhorn community’s universal hall, and you have a romantic streak a mile wide, and your name is Mike Scott, then the temptation to come over all mystical must be irresistible. But he makes it work here, with the simplest of means and some oneiric fiddle playing. |

Stuart, I love that song. Truly beautiful. The album it comes from is underrated in the Waterboys canon. |

I was thinking that myself, Padraig. I'd probably never have bought it if it hadn't turned up in the racks of a new record shop that a brave couple recently opened down in Ancona... how great to be in one again! A rich and varied selection and a good classical corner too. So I spent an hour or two and a small fortune... a hastily googled positive comment in the Guardian suggested Universal Hall might be worth getting. The Scott lad should never be underestimated. And then off for a curry for lunch... what a civilised day! |

The Seekers - California Dreamin'. Got this thing got this thing for Judith Durham at the moment, especially Georgy Girl. Great voice, lovely song, and lyrics by Carry On star Jim Dale. Not sure her version of California Dreamin is better than the Mamas and the Papas, but it's a good version. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwxF8hfx x64 |

Thanks for the link Andrew. With an artist as old and established as Dominique A the worry is always "when will he put out a dud?" Hopefully not this time. At any rate I can promise you a great live show. Simon, you are definitely drilling down into the odd sort of territory more often expected of me with your Judith Durham exploration. It's ironic for an Aussie to do "California Dreamin'" because that is a genuine coals to Newcastle example there. For years we folks here in California thumb nailed Australia as "a giant California." Today we add the modifier "before California became crowded." For this particular song the intensity and almost-desperation of the original wins. After all, the former Mugwumps really DID have to suffer the cold before reinventing themselves out on the Left Coast. |

Hey Randy I started the Judith D. love-in on this board!!! I'm sure that I've already mentioned how the "Live at the Talk of the Town" was my ever first record. On the back cover are black and white photos of the group...and at a tender age I had a huge crush on Judith Durham, because of that photo. She just looked so...bohemian! PS Have you seen this clip of Dominique A filmed in the Musée D'Orsay...goodness knows how they got the permission to do that, but it makes for a fantastic backdrop. Amazing to think that the building was almost demolished ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5EEfZYRq FHM |

That's a nice video Andrew. While I realize he isn't known to the average French person on the street I like to think that Dominique A is recognized as one of France's most valuable living music figures among the cognoscenti, perhaps with the consequence that the sort of person who might be in charge of the Musee d'Orsay might be among his admirers. He had a good healthy devoted audience at the mid-sized Trianon in Paris in 2016. |

This afternoon, before I logged onto this Board and learned of Mark Smith’s death, my iPod tossed up this fine example of great late period Fall . . . . https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tYvOjr9oOz g I thought about how sometimes MES could still come up with vital music even after he had a right to never do anything good again. He was one year younger than I. |

Btw, I agree with your choices Simon and Pádraig. I used to deploy “New Big Prinz” to try to make new converts to the Fall. I didn’t think anybody with ears could overlook the excitement of that number. And covering a Chic disco number was so great, such a perverse move by the ultimate antidote to disco. |

Chicago Now, another great. A post-punk film noir theme. I remember being totally surprised at how good "Extricate" was as an album. Brix was gone, which I assumed at the time would be fatal. They had signed up with Polygram god forbid and, yes, the production definitely has the sound of a bit of money behind it. And the damn album is one long string of inspired moments. The obligatory cover was of a failed Searchers single from long after the time anybody wanted to hear from them, an inspired choice only a true music geek could have come up with. The title song is probably the only thing I'm not all that keen on. Ok . . . "British People in Hot Weather" can get on the nerves too. |

The Fall - C.R.E.E.P., as close as they were ever likely to get to a pop/soul song. It could have been a Motown hit, which I presume is what Scanlon and Hanley were aiming for. |

We Free Kings - Gold. I do remember there were some posts a couple years about this 80's Scottish band. I only know the band from their album "Hell on Earth & Rosy Cross", which I found on vinyl, and some youtube videos. Mike Scott mentions them in his autobiography and he stole one of their members. |

Fred, On a good night, an amazing live band! Their recordings fail to capture their energy and originality. I think Mike Scott "stole" quite a lot more than one of their members (Colin Blakey)...Fisherman's Blues would never had existed if Scott hadn't met up with the Kings. I think that they all shared a house in Fife together for a while. One of my most memorable gigs was a "Friends of the Earth" benefit at Carlton Studios in Edinburgh with both bands on the bill. They joined forces for several songs at the end of the night... |

Thanks, Andrew. They seem like they would have been a great live band back in the day. I did see the Waterboys live in Seattle on the Fisherman's Blues tour on a night that Mike Scott had a verbal confrontation with a member of the audience and he then walked off the stage without an encore. |

Nouvelle vague – Just can’t get enough Since a genius young chef took over the local wine bar, this has been my favourite food stop, the only problem being that he has the radio constantly switched to a jazz station that scats me up the bleedin wall. The first half hour of dinner however is usually straightforward pop, which is when this song came on, and very nice it sounded too. As far as I can make out, the NV concept, and what a great one it is, is to round up a bunch of doe-eyed French waifs, herd them into a studio, and get them to sing along, more or less spontaneously, to a slightly jazzy version of some post-punk classic. I didn’t even recognise that this was a Depeche Mode song, but I only know about three, so not a surprise. Well, it's a great concept for about one album, anyway, I don’t know if you can spin a career out of it, though they seem to be trying. |
