The Windmills of Your Mind - Noel Harrison (possibly not for the first time here).

Snow is falling heavily here in SW England (a rare event), there's deer in our garden foraging for fallen apples in the darkness, my mother's health is failing badly, I'm 55 next week and feeling wistful. On the plus side, my health is good and I'm still playing football (or soccer...), I can draw on my private pension next week that I've been contributing to for decades, so I can at least buy the next Go-Betweens boxset when it comes out!

Happy spring - or autumn for all you antipodeans!

Simon, I'm sorry to hear about your mother, but happy to hear your pension is kicking in. My mother just sent me pictures of snow falling around her house in Ireland.

Buffalo Tom - All Be Gone, track one from their out today new album, Quiet and Peace. This is quite the most Rolling Stonesey thing they've done in a long time.

Patti Smith - Smells Like Teen Spirit.

Superb cover version, complete with banjos or mandolins. Only discovered this yesterday. Fantastic.

David Byrne - Angels. Very similar to Once In A Lifetime, but hey, why not rip off himself?

Grant Lee Buffalo - Bethlehem Steel. An invocation of America's industrial working class as powerful as anything by Bruce Springsteen or Woody Guthrie or, for that matter, John Steinbeck. I just hope Trump doesn't misappropriate it like Reagan did with Born In The USA in the 80s. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyiZN7_m wa8

That's lovely Andreas. Wish I could buy it. Bandcamp is so screwed up that every time I try to buy a copy it adds it to the previous requests and I can't delete any of them.

Yay! I succeeded. It was a case of non-intuitive screen layout. The contents of the cart are to the right of the screen showing the band's release. Once you get to the part where your order is summarized there is no option to edit or delete anything except for your address. And each retry adds another copy.

I suppose I'm a bit like Trou, Andreas. The Italian group stationed in London were too "noisy" for me. The BVs are fall in the middle of my groove. Thank you for posting this.

Hi Hugh & Randy,

you are so welcome :-)

Sometimes I like noisy music, too...

But I like Go-Betweens, Triffids & co. the most

Andreas/Randy, I have just taken delivery of cd copies of the two releases by The BV's and my copy of 'Speaking From A Distance' is faulty. It stops playing 37 seconds into the second track on my CD Player and Computer causing both to hang. I have tried ripping the disc using dBpoweramp but the programme hangs while attempting to rip the second track. Looking closely at the playing surface of the disc, it is obvious that only the first track and part of the second track have been burned successfully onto same. Hopefully it is just a one-off. I have e-mailed the band.

Randy, The band are named after a long time agony aunt and columnist with the Daily Record newspaper ( Joan Burnie.) They don't pull any punches lyrically which ensures that they don't get much in the way of radio exposure.

Allo Darlin’ recorded a great cover of Just Joans’ If You Don’t Pull. I’ve said before that I think Allo Darlin’s covers album has three great tracks, two awful ones and one so-so. If You Don’t pull is more Eux Autres than AC/DC, thankfully. Best of all there’s not a ukulele in sight (or sound).

Mose Allison - If you're Goin to the City

Turned on BBC Radio 6 today and it was playing. I tend to listen to BBC Radio 4 (news, politics, comedy) and Radio 5 (news, banal chat, sport) but people keep on recommending Radio 6, and if they play Mose, then why not?

John Newman - Love me again

A big hit several years back and really, just a supremely exhilarating piece of pop. It even made me cut a few ragged dance steps in the bar this morning, much to the horror of the young barmaid, probably worried I'd do myself an injury. The piano break towards the end is just brilliant.

The problem I have with BBC Radio 6 Music is that the times of day when I would listen to it the presenters are awful and the music little better (Keaveny, Laverne, Lamacq, kershaw, Morgan, etc.).

And then the few genuinely good presenters (Gideon Coe, Marc Riley and even Chris Hawkins) are on at times when I don’t want to listen.

If I catch five minutes of Shaun Keaveny it ruins my day.

Burgers, thanks for the heads-up - I guess I was just lucky, but my diet of Radio 4 and 5 doesn't give me much in the way of music (and I really, really hate Radio 2!!)

The iPod's greatest surprise on the drive to work:

Winnebago Orchestra -- White Pearls

One of the great atmospheric classics from our former board participant Spencer Roberts in his partnership with Caroline Trettine. I wish there were a Youtube link but I couldn't find one.
