I am still processing this. As Hugh can attest, I have repeatedly expressed incredulity at the sheer volume of music coming from Zac. He was unbelievably productive. He seemed to be responsible for half the music coming out of Melbourne in this decade whether as engineer, performer or writer. I knew he was young of course but had no idea HOW young. It can't be so, but it's almost as if he knew he wasn't going to have a very long life span and so he jammed as much as was humanly possible into the time he had. I think you all know I've been raving about Ocean Party for the past--what, has it even been two years yet? Counting the new one they have produced eight official albums PLUS a bunch of EPs and odds and sods, often of very high quality. I don't think he was there at the beginning but he was involved in most of those recordings. Selfishly I hope they can continue without him but wouldn't be surprised if they decide against it. I've been telling anyone who will listen that Ocean Party is the ultimate, quintessential millennial band. They are more collaborative and less individually ego-driven than groups from earlier times. Taken as a whole body their songs offer a pointillist window into the challenge of being a young male in this confusing era so different from the one I entered at their age. I assume people think I'm projecting too much onto them. Time will tell. If nothing else comes out of this it is one of the more vivid reminders of the importance of walking outside and making the most of the day at hand. |
