Padraig, are you forgetting the Rolling Blackouts' "Hope Downs"? That would be a safe entry on my list of the year's important albums. I'm crossing my fingers that I get my copy of the Ocean Party album, which I really think should have arrived before now. It will certainly factor into my 2018 list. My computer tells me I've bought 20 2018 releases so far this year, which is actually a high total of current-year purchases for me. I can probably put together a personal 2018 CD like yours, but first I want that OP disc. | ||

I am, Randy! And I also forgot to include Gorillaz in my top 20 albums of the year on another thread, but did include them on the disc above. I almost included Ocean Party on both, but then cut them at the last. Oh, if I took out the two EPs I could have put Gorillaz and either Rolling Blackouts or OP into my albums of the year. Ah, well. | ||

1 Portishead - SOS. Okay I know it's not from 2018 but it sums up my year, which has been a somewhat difficult one for me emotionally, and it also sums up the state of the UK, seemingly presently in the throes of political, social, moral and economic self-destruction. (Don't worry, while I'm not feeling tip-top at the moment, I think I'm past the nadir and I'm seeing a counsellor who will hopefully help things further; I'm not desperate or in anyway self-destructive - unlike my country!!! - so don't be too concerned. And I flippin' hate our present grey winter days. The SAD light's coming out tomorrow!) | ||

Peter, you forced me to it. This year's big disappointments were the Preoccupations, whose "New Material" is undistinguished, and Gaetan Roussel, whose "Trafic" yielded absolutely nothing for me. Unfortunately I still have Lowtide and Miossec on their way. If I can judge by their previous album, Lowtide will have a beautiful gem to offer. The Aussies are really in business nowadays. Without them in the consideration and in alphabetical order: Arthur H -- La Boxeuse Amoureuse Augie March -- Bitter Clingerzz Blush Response -- Blasphemy BV's -- Dazed Hair Barbara Carlotti -- Tu Peux Dormir Chills -- Bad Sugar Ciggie Witch -- Look of Pain. This was Zac Denton's last year on Earth so I'm including songs from his side groups Ciggie Witch and Pregnancy as well as Ocean Party. He was a furiously prolific musician. It's as if he knew. Dominique A -- Le temps qui passe sans moi Dominique A -- Les deux cotes d'une Ombre. Two albums, two entries, which allowed me to include one of his rhythm groove numbers. I am suffering for my stubborn thing for CDs. This coming year I'll probably be able to order LPs with reasonable confidence as I won't be at work and thus can rescue them from the porch. The Sea Pinks' (Ulster) and Nightingales' (Brum) most recent releases are only available on vinyl and download. For a moment it looked like that was going to be the story for Ocean Party as well. | ||

Peter, I have not even heard of three of the artists on your list. I'll check them out. I have heard of Fontaines DC through a friend who lectured the singer in college. My friend sent me a link to a session they recorded for a Seattle radio station, which was very good. I got a definite Fall vibe from them, and the Velvets too, now that you mention it. Peter, I've listened to the three I hadn't heard before. Mattiel reminds me of Nancy Sinatra, and the Bess Atwell song really reminds me of Tanita Tikaram (also in the way the way she dresses in the video. It could be a complete coincidence, but I suspect she has been checking out her parents' copy of Ancient Heart). Nancy Sinatra and Tanita Tikaram are both very good people to be influenced by. And now I'm listening to Ought's Disgraced In America. Has Scott Walker joined The Feelies? Two more artists whom it's good to be influenced by. | ||

Padraig, I watched that KEXP session only recently and loved it. I hear Luke Kelly/Dubliners in the "Schoolday's Over" excerpt at the end of current single "Too Real" and the being unafraid to sing in that Dublin Brogue. I've loaded up yours & Randy's playlists for the week ahead. The McCartney bonus track is only one I am missing. (see Holsapple has a V Alex Chilton album release from 2018 also?) Didn't recognize much of Randy's but got it together too. A friend had "Smoko" by The Chats on his Best of 2018 CD, both of you might like that track also if you don't already know it. |
