The Claim - Not So Simple Sharon Says. This is the kind of music that got me into indie pop in the first place, though I'm pretty sure I never hear of The Claim until reading about them on this board last week.

Edwyn Collins - It all makes sense to me

This little ballad moved me the most on the first few listens of this often punchy album. He's been through the mill but he sounds great. From the Moray Firth to an old man's heart!

The National - Light Years. They're back, with an affecting and brilliant single.

Otis Redding - (Sittin' On The) Dock Of The Bay [Alternative Take 2]. It's not as good as the originally released version, but it's still genius.

Kenny Lynch -- Movin' Away

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IweVcgEE xKY

Kenny Lynch put far too much energy into being a cheery entertainer type. But he was a good songwriter with an excellent meaty voice. He spent some time in the NYC Brill Building. I recently picked up an anthology of his 1960s recordings. Most of it falls short of what his talents could have achieved. "Movin' Away" is the class item in the bunch and I already had it on a various artists compilation but it rewards revival. It's a fine example of the usually-overlooked British soul sound of the 60s.

And inspired by Padraig's tip of the hat to Otis Redding above, here's something on a DJ single that fell through the mail slot yesterday from the young man I propose as the true voice of England today. (Sorry, Stephen Yaxley-Lennon.)

Fontaines D.C. - Roy’s Tune. This one could almost be a Go-Betweens song, if Grant and Robert were from working class Dublin rather than middle class Queensland.

I agree Padraig. I'm watching Andreas' video link right now. Up until this number I was thinking "is Padraig on drugs? Maybe Fall from working class Dublin, but I sure don't hear any Go-Betweens!" And then this song arrived. Back to the video . . . .

Only cold and flu tablets, Randy.

I watched some of Andreas's Rockpalast link and will watch the rest too.

Fontaines D.C. - Boys In The Better Land ("a face like sin and heart like a James Joyce novel"). This isn't faux intelligence, it's for real. A friend of mine lectured one the Fontaines' guitarists in college.

Randy, Kenny Lynch was a regular on TV in my youth. Turned up on variety and panel shows in the 70's & 80's. Always thought of him as a comedian rather than an all-rounder until I saw him as songwriter on some early Small Faces songs.

Jerry, I realize that Kenny Lynch built a pretty solidly uncool reputation in the U.K. doing crap which paid his bills. But besides the Small Faces songs--"Sorry, She's Mine" is a longtime favorite--he also co-wrote a batch of often very good songs with the Hollies' lead guitarist Tony Hicks in the early 70s. Here's one of them from 1971:

Padraig, it's impossible to knock musicians who read books. Ireland seems like the most obvious country to spawn them.

Peter Gabriel - Of These, Hope. I could have picked any track from the magnificent Passion, but this is the one playing right now.

Julia Jacklin - Body, the incredibly moving opening track from her incredibly moving new album Crushing. I thought she was a major talent from the moment I first saw her live in Sydney in October 2016 (I also saw her three weeks later in London). With her second solo album she has lived up to that promise.

Pega Monstro - 'Estrada'

Hmmm, some crunchy Portuguese girl pop-rock - goes a bit early Pink Floyd a little too soon for my liking, but still fairly cheap & cheerful stuff.

The Waterboys - Where The Action Is. As good a rock/soul crossover as I've heard in years.
