Zaz - Déterre

Took me a bit of time to realise I'd never got round to buying Zaz's second album, which has much the same mix of gypsy jazz, chanson and French pop as the first. This is a delicious little crescendo of a song halfway through, with keyboards-for-hire Londoner Glen Scott driving the Hammond.

Padraig, A vastly underrated singer / songwriter in my humble opinion. I followed his career after he left Fairport Convention and he released a lot of very good albums over a number of years ( Matthews Southern Comfort; Plainsong; Ian / Iain Matthews.)

Jazzateers - Up To My Eyes. What a song. I never heard it before today, but it’s 22 years old. Another new old band for me to track down releases by. I imagine Hugh is a fan.

Padraig, The band only released one album ( although they recorded three ) a 12" single and a 7" single back in the 1980s. I have copies of 'I Shot The President' which was released on Marina Records in 1997 and 'Don't Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy - Unreleased Recordings 1981 - 1982' which was released on Cherry Red Records in 2014. 'I Shot The President' is a compilation which collects together 9 of the ten tracks on the debut album, one from the unreleased debut album and nine from the unreleased third album.

Charlie Tipper Experiment - Ride Out

This band started life as the Charlie Tipper Experiment before changing their name to the Charlie Tipper Conspiracy and then Arrest! Charlie Tipper. Their back catalogue is available directly from the band via Bandcamp.

Wow, the Jazzateers. What a confusing band! I remember Spencer Roberts (formerly of this board) being a great fan of Paul Quinn. Here's the first song I got when I asked youtube for Jazzateers:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvCc7tDc z7Q

As I listened to this I thought "this is from 1997? It sounds like 1984." Well, of course, the 1997 release date is an anachronism.

But then every Jazzateers track youtube pitched up for me had a different singer and a different sound, including Padraig's proposition "Up to my Eyes."

This has now sent me off to Bourgie Bourgie who apparently took up where Jazzateers left off.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xJGjn-q eXg

Not sure how often I'd want to hear this sort of mannered pop, but it is entertaining at least on occasion.

I hope I remember this stuff by mid June. It's not a good idea to order music when I'm leaving town a week from now.

Lucky people in Islington will be seeing Robert perform in a few hours. Sigh.

Hugh, I was shocked when I went on discogs and saw that. Their two videos look pretty expensive so I expected some albums. Does anybody sweep up all this Bourgoyne/Band/Quinn stuff retrospectively?

Randy, Links to a couple of interesting articles on The Jazzateers and Bourgie Bourgie.

https://everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/Jazz ateers/

https://everipedia.org/wiki/lang_en/Paul _Quinn_%28singer%29/

The vast majority of The Jazzateers recordings are contained on the two releases ( I Shot The President & Don't Let Your Son Grow Up To Be A Cowboy. ) I believe MCA hold the rights to the unreleased Bourgie Bourgie album which I assume might have ended up looking something like this had it been released :-

The GBs - Magic in here

Finally caught up with the documentary, moving stuff, although I was just making myself comfortable with a herbal tea and a digestive for the second half, so to speak, when the damn thing came to an end. Anyway, Robert in cool gunslinger mode, beefily funny contributions from Clinton Walker, and good to see Willsteed having a moment as he finally seems to realise that if he’ll be remembered for anything it will be his contribution to something as gloriously beautiful as 16LL.

Paul Haig - Something Good

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UWuprgf 74Y

What a song! In an alternative universe, in the year 1989, this song was N° 1 for 17 weeks. In the NME, Paul Morley once famously wrote of him "Is this man too talented to live ?"

Co-produced by Alan Rankine

Randy, They formed in Paisley in the 1990s. They apparently played lots of live gigs in and around Paisley and Glasgow but disbanded after a few years without ever releasing any songs. They reformed last year and released the Lovely Things single in July. They have now released a second single 'Don't Be Like That, Girl.' It is another lovely song. Both available as digital downloads only from Bandcamp. I believe one member of the band was in the Church Grims who recorded a few titles for Egg Records. I am really looking forward to seeing them play live next month at the Oran Mor.

Hugh, thanks for the additional information. Last night I did a little digging and found another Muldoons in Michigan who have also existed since the 1990s. They have been much more active though, and will pretty thoroughly interfere with a person's search for the Scottish group. Discogs reports a currently unavailable CD single for "Lovely Things."

"Lovely Things" is a very polished and pleasing piece of work.

I'm very glad to hear they are available on bandcamp because the discogs page only shows a Facebook link. I have never and will never go onto Facebook.

Rory Gallagher - Tattoo'd Lady

Listening to a lot of blues these days for some reason, to the wife's surprise. Solemnly, I told her, "Sometimes a man gotta do whatta man gotta do/Sometimes a man gotta listen to the blues..." Which worried her even more. The story goes of course that Jimi Hendrix was once asked: "What's it like being the greatest guitarist in the world?" to which he replied, "I don't know... go ask Rory Gallagher." Which was an elegant response indeed. Can't imagine Clapton was too amused, though.
