Tanita Tikaram - Glass Love Train (LA version), I loved (and still love) her first album. I liked her second, but lost interest after a not so great show in Cork almost three decades ago. But I've been reacquainted with her through a new compilation that has made me think I've got some catching up to do. |

Chickpea Darlings -- Hobbled. Actually, if I could I'd post "Your Generation" but it's not on youtube (unless Hugh finds it somehow). I blundered onto Huw Bucknell's music a few years ago when I picked up a copy of Firestation's Spanish Amanda collection entitled "Brave New Girl." That turn of the century collection showcased a string of marvelously solipsistic heartbreak songs following the end of a relationship. In the intervening years, Bucknell's eye for irony and detail has sharpened. Spanish Amanda continues as well. Hugh has previously posted links to songs from "Dim Sum." Bucknell resolutely refuses to monetize his work, actively encouraging people to copy and forward his music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwiJItlD X0E |

Lovely harmonies Stuart. I love Holly Throsby's "furry" sounding voice. Matching her with the other two singers really works. |

A House - Blind Faith. Irish band sings about Catholicism and makes it poptastic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7PbDNxq 2xA |

Padraig, your post reminded me of Dave Couse and A House. I knew I had "I Am the Greatest" and "Wide-Eyed and Ignorant" but totally forgot I also have "I Want Too Much." Obviously due for a re-hearing. |

Bobbie Gentry - Seasons Come, Seasons Go One of her excellent self-penned songs, though even her lovely voice can't fit "bedroom windows" into the verse structure comfortably - it always niggles me when a singer has to denature natural stress to suit the tune. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdU_Htw5 mkQ |

I don't think there is much love for British folk music on this forum but this group is one of the best currently operating in the U.K. scene. A really nice video as well. Harp And A Monkey - Calico Printer's Clerk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8wKvMv6 0go |

Hugh, thanks for that. I then listened to a number of other Harp & Monkey tunes on youtube. My song of the day is written by Robert Vickers(!) from 1982 when he was a New Yorker in a band called The Colors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZGFYRlz 9Jo Robert plays bass. He is not the singer. But it's his song! Commendably short at two and a quarter minutes. |

RIP Clive James. One of the funniest writers I have ever read, his brilliantly composed Sunday TV column used to have me in stitches. Later, he wrote wittily and beautifully of his Australian childhood, and also showed that it was possible to analyse difficult poetry with both humour and lyrical insight. And he wrote the words for this airy, lovely ballad that yokes together native sea traders and Apollo astronauts: https://www.peteatkin.com/play/i19t.htm |

Ronnie Lane – The Poacher https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqQRphZt v1M Debris must be a contender for any top ten song list I might start to compile, but I’d forgotten about this one until the little oboe melody kicked off and radio memories came flooding back. Peel, maybe? What a great lyric, too. There’s an evocative discussion of the song here: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2012/m ar/15/ronnie-lane-poacher A lot of his recorded music is a bit too hale-fellow-well-met-let’s-boogie-for-a- while (my wife popped her head round the door at one point and sighed, “What now, cowboy music?”) but then here and there a real gem comes along. |

Cowboy music, Stuart! Just what your poor wife needs . . . . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcUr2nCm Wx0 And Side Two: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmR8oDxN Ks8 The glory of it is that the entire album is over in 26 and a half atmospheric minutes. Kind of the opposite of Prog Rock. |
